Robert Bruns

Colonel (Ret) Robert (Bob) Dennis Bruns, United States
Army, age 74 of Garden Ridge, Texas passed away on
December 6, 2020 after an ongoing battle with dementia.
He was born on March 29, 1946 in Hull, Iowa. Bob
graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Institution Management and attended
graduate school at the University of Maryland where he
earned a Master of Science degree in Foods / Institution
Administration. Bob faithfully served our Nation for 30 years
as an Army Dietitian where he attained the rank of Colonel.
Bob entered the Army in 1968 as a dietetic intern at Walter
Reed General Hospital and upon completion of his internship
served in the Food Service Division. Highlights of his
military career included tours in Washington, DC, Fort
Wainwright, Alaska, Fort Carson, Colorado, Fitzsimmons
Army Medical Center, Denver, Colorado, Tripler Army
Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, Health Services
Command (later MEDCOM) and Brooke Army Medical
Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Bob was recognized
throughout his military career with many awards and medals
including the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster,
Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters and the
Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Following retirement from the Army, Bob worked for the
Texas Department of Aging and Disability as a Nutritionist
Surveyor for Medicare accredited care facilities for 15 years.
He belonged to several organizations including the American
Dietetic Association (later Academy of Nutrition and
Dietetics), San Antonio Dietetic Association and the Retired
Army Medical Specialist Corps Association.
He is survived by his wife, Karol of 52 years, his
son, Jay and wife, Elizabeth, daughter Stacie and husband
Ron, daughter Caryn, seven grandchildren and his sister
Mary Bruns. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Jay
and Evelyn Bruns.
The family expresses their appreciation and gratitude to
all the dedicated and caring staff at Grace Place Senior
Activity Center, San Antonio, Gruene Senior Living Memory
Care and the Hope Hospice both of New Braunfels, TX
during his last days.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials or
donations be directed to Hope Hospice, Meals on Wheels
Grace Place or the charity of your choice.
Visitation will be at Schertz Funeral Home on
December 17 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A private ceremony
for the immediate family will be at Fort Sam Houston
National Cemetery on December 18 where he will be
interred with full Military Honors.
