George Ricks

January 9, 1947 — January 18, 2021

George Nichols Ricks of Cibolo passed away at his home on Monday, January 18, 2021 at the age of 74 after a two-year battle with colon cancer.  George was born on Jan. 9, 1947 in San Antonio, TX to Elizabeth A. Ricks and Sam Beall Ricks, Sr.  He spent the first four years of his childhood in Kenedy, TX until his father was assigned a civil servant position at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He moved back to San Antonio to attend high school at Texas Military Institute.  He graduated from TMI in 1965 and remained life-long friends with many of his classmates, whom he considered to be like brothers.  He attended the University of Texas for two years before serving a two-year term in the Navy.  After being discharged, he attended Sam Houston State University and graduated in 1972.

George briefly served as a park ranger at Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. before beginning a career in retail and business.  He worked for F.W. Woolworth and later for Woolco Dept. Stores.  He met his wife of 42 years, Barbara, while working at the Woolco Dept. Store in Port Arthur, TX.  They married on January 26, 1979.  George began working for Radio Shack in 1978 as a store manager in various locations, as well as District Manager in St. Louis and Memphis.  He later worked for Texas Copy, Ikon, Documation, and Ubeo from which he retired in September 2020.

George and Barbara have lived in the Schertz-Cibolo area since 1986. George served on the SCUC ISD school board from 1995-2005.  He then served on the Board of Methodist Healthcare Ministries from 2005 up until his death; he served as Board Chair and was currently a member of the Honorary Board.  While he was proud of his service on the school board, he found his service at MHM to be most rewarding.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Sam Beall Ricks, Sr.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara, their son, Michael, from Austin, his brother Sam Beall Ricks II (Sharon) from Richardson, TX, and his brother Tobe E. Ricks from Kenedy, TX. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, in-laws, and his dogs Buster and Callie.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Nathan Shumway and the staff at Texas Oncology for the care George received in his battle with cancer.

As a member of Schertz United Methodist Church for over 30 years, George served on various committees and also taught the Searchers Sunday School Class for over 20 years.  In lieu of flowers, George requested that donations be made to Schertz UMC, Building Fund, 3460 Roy Richard Dr., Schertz, TX 78154.

Due to Covid restrictions, a private service will be held at Schertz UMC, with a celebration of life memorial at a later date.  Log on to schertzumc.com to livestream the private service at 4 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2021.
