Richard Townsend, Jr.

March 15, 1989 — September 12, 2022

Richard “Richy” Earl Townsend, Jr., entered eternal peace on Monday, September 12, 2022, after battling renal cell carcinoma for five and one-half years. He was surrounded by family and friends as our heavenly Father welcomed him home.

Richy was born in Frederick, Maryland on March 15, 1989, to Richard and Linda Townsend. Older sister, Laura, was excited to have an addition and playmate to the family.  He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith, and a member of Grace Lutheran Church, San Antonio, TX. The family relocated to the Schertz/Cibolo area in 1999 after living in Maryland, North Carolina, and Georgia. Richy attended Barbara C. Jordan Intermediate School, J. Frank Dobie Junior High School, Saint Mary's Hall, Samuel Clemens High School, and was a member of the first graduating class of Byron P. Steele High School in 2003. Richy always had a knack for video games and technology. After a tour of a few local colleges and universities, he began his college experience at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.  He had a desire to work and placed college on-hold as he journeyed the career market working, then later returning to university-life obtaining his Associates degree in Information Technology, from Hallmark University.  Richy transitioned to a job with the Department of Air Force as a Motor Vehicle Operator while continuing his pursuit of an Information Technology opportunity.   He was excited to begin his first IT-related position with the Defense Commissary Agency in October 2022.

Over the years, Richy developed many strong friendships. He cared deeply for those in his circle and helped them in any way he could. He also had many interests, surrounding video games, technology, the Marvel Universe, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and of course Harry Potter. He collected Funko Pop figurines and obscure crime memorabilia and proudly wore pop culture themed clothing that always brought compliments from strangers. He was known for his sense of humor, unforgettable sarcasm, and unending selflessness.  Richy enjoyed listening to audio books, musicals, and had an eclectic taste in music. He also enjoyed watching travel and food shows and would be inspired to try new recipes.

It is said that a soldier fights not for what's in front of him but for what he's leaving behind.  Richy displayed this same fortitude during his life and is leaving behind a legacy of love and protection for family and friends.

Richy is survived by his parents, sister, and extended family residing in Georgia, Pennsylvania, California, and Ohio; as well as pets Pippa, Parys, and Phoenix. He now joins family members preceded in death, to include his maternal grandparents Robert and Florence Irving, uncle Kevin Irving, Cleveland, Ohio; paternal grandparents Solomon and Bertha Townsend, uncles Heartesel, Robert, Raymond Townsend, and aunt Mildred Smith, Pittsburgh PA.
