Monica Mathewson

Monica Lynn Mathewson passed away on April 4, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 57 years. She was born in Geneva, Illinois on January 27, 1966. Monica was the daughter of Robert and Kathleen (Grass) Mathewson. She spent her childhood moving from place to place in the US and around the world as part of a military family. Monica’s last move was to San Antonio while she was in college.

Monica graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1989. She started her career with the San Antonio Area Council of Girl Scouts. Monica had a desire to help others through her work. She returned to school and received her master's degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in Social Work in 1995. Monica worked as a Social Worker in a number of settings including Judson ISD, San Antonio ISD, Northeast Baptist Hospital and the US Army. She was working for CVS Aetna at the time of her death.

Monica enjoyed cooking and showing her love to others with food. She loved to travel and enjoyed traveling with and visiting family. Monica was an avid shutterbug documenting the important and happy moments in her life. She greatly enjoyed her work as a Play Therapist.

Monica is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother Brian Mathewson (Staci); sisters Eileen Troncoso (Mario), Angela Schone (Ken), Debra Reasor (Kenny), and Christine Horton (James); special aunt Betty Grass; nieces and nephews Miranda, Amelia, Isabelle, Kiersten (Josh), Tabitha, Callin (Erin), Brooke, Cooper, Tyler (Emily), Mason, Brady, Senate and Scarlett; 4 great nieces and nephews and special friends Phronsie, Pete and Phina Kelly-Zion; Jim and Suzy Fraser and Marlene Mathewson.

A Visitation will be held at Schertz Funeral Home on April 12, 2023 starting at 5:00 pm, with a Rosary being held at 7:00 pm. A Graveside Service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery on April 13, 2023 at 10:00 am. A Reception will follow the Graveside Service at the Bluebonnet (Schertz Pkwy & Lookout Road) from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.
