Marie Medina

August 7, 1927 — February 9, 2023

Marie Garza Medina was born to Federico and Maria Ana Escobedo Garza on Sunday, August 7, 1927, in Runge, Texas.  She departed this life at the age of 95, at home surrounded by loved ones, on February 9, 2023, in San Antonio.

Marie was raised in San Antonio where she attended Burbank High School. She met her husband Louis Medina, Jr., while he was attending basic training at Lackland Air Force Base.  Lou and Marie wed on February 17, 1948, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in San Antonio. She traveled the world with him, and their growing family, including assignments in Spain, Bermuda, and numerous stateside locations. Some of her favorite tourist destinations included Hawaii, Australia, and France.

Marie worked in various jobs over the years including Joske’s of Texas and Gulf Insurance Company and she enjoyed volunteering her time to help others. She had a passion for investing and finance and excelled in this area during her retirement. Marie was an active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma, Texas participating in the St. Ann’s Society, Bible Study Group and Adult Faith. She loved attending children’s mass on Sunday mornings so that she could listen to the children sing. She served the Randolph AFB Wives Club as recording secretary and treasurer.

She cherished spending time with her grandkids over the years, playing Uno, helping raise them, providing advice and support, and was known for her generosity to her family and the church. To say Marie was deeply loved and thought quite remarkable by her family would be an understatement. Certainly, precious to us all and already dearly missed, we are privileged to have her in our hearts, forever and always.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Fred; her husband, of 51 years, Louis Medina, Jr.; her daughter Carolyn Verhalen; granddaughter Sarah Verhalen and great granddaughter Chloe Verhalen; grandson John Verhalen and his fiancé, Jennifer Woodward; and grandson Christopher Penet.

She is survived by her sons Larry Medina and wife Susan, James Medina, Rick Medina and wife Diane, Mike Medina and wife Margaret, and by her daughters Cynthia Medina and Patty Penet. Marie will be forever cherished and remembered by her grandchildren Rozzell Medina, Hillary Loveless, Carlos Medina, Raven Medina, Danielle Gardiner, and Jake Medina.
