Juan Vega Flores

November 13, 1931 — July 20, 2022

Juan Emilio Vega Flores was born on November 13, 1931 to Jorge and Celedonia. Born in Santana de Sabana Grande, PR. Juan Vega grew up in a traditional environment, where the teachings of values such as love for God, education, respect, loyalty, honesty, and hard work were the norm of everyday living. Being the youngest of the 5 boys, and with 7 sisters he had challenges like any younger sibling, but he learned much from them. He completed 8th grade, that was the highest level in James F. Cooper of Sabana Grande. He married Ana Luisa, and joined the Army during the Korean War.

After returning from war, he focused on his entrepreneurial endeavors by opening a bodega in NY. In 1967, he returned with his family to Puerto Rico, and continued to grow his businesses in the food industry as owner of a grocery store, and later a restaurant in Cataño. During that time, one of the most famous sports in Puerto Rico, was cock fighting, and he loved it. This past time was something he enjoyed sharing with his sons.

With Covid hitting every country, Puerto Rico wasn’t spared, and leaving your home was a challenge, as many groceries stores, and businesses were closed. The isolation had an impact on Juan Vega’s health and his memory began to decline. In 2021, his children moved him to Cedar Creek, TX from Bayamon, PR. The last 7 months of Juan’s life were a treasure, as he spent time with his children, grandkids and great-grandkids, and made new friends.

Juan Vega was an easy-going and a generous man. Even at 90 you could usually find him walking the neighborhood, sitting on the front porch or next to the picture window soaking in the sun. One of his favorite activities was watching “Caso Cerrado” or telenovelas.

Juan was a child of God, cleverly disguised as a beloved son, brother, uncle, father, and Abuelito. God called His child home on Wednesday, July 20, 2022. He is survived by two daughters: Lona (Joe) Pagan of Spring Branch, TX and Maria Irizarry of Cedar Creek, TX, two sons John (Kelly) Vega of San Antonio, TX and Juan Vega Cruz of Bayamon, PR. Juan Vega was Abuelito to 7 grandchildren: Richard (Lisa), John (Tiffanie), Jason (Tori), Steven (Jessica), Michael, Malachi (Nathan), and Juan; 15 great-grandchildren. He was also a loved and cherished “Tio” to many nephews and nieces.

You will be missed, Bendicion!
