Jeannine Bradshaw

March 8, 1934 — November 15, 2022

Jeannine Joy (Johnston) Bradshaw of Live Oak, Texas, passed away on November
15, 2022 at the age of 88. She was born in Topeka, Kansas, daughter to Muriel Poort
Johnston and Chalmer Johnston. Jeannine’s parents separated when she was young,
making her early life challenging. With the aid of her church and extended family,
(especially her beloved Aunt Ruth), Jeannine, younger sister Sharon and her mother
Muriel, lived frugally. When Jeannine’s mother became long term ill, Jeannine, at age
12, got a job at an ice cream store, working afternoons and weekends to assist with
the family finances. In her mid-teens, Jeannine obtained a full time job at the local
telephone company working the switchboards nights and weekends. In her late teens,
Jeannine was promoted to shift supervisor. These positions with the telephone
company greatly assisted her in being able to provide for her mother and sister. Even
though she worked full time, she was able to graduate high school with excellent
grades and also participated in the high school’s women’s athletics programs.
Throughout much of her life, Jeannine had excellent athletic abilities.
While working at the telephone company, she met Buddy Morton Bradshaw, a young
U.S. Air Force officer. Within a year, Buddy and Jeannine were married in Topeka,
Kansas and remained married for over 60 years. Buddy preceded Jeannine in death
in 2017.
During their marriage, Buddy and Jeannine had four children: Michael David
Bradshaw, Rebecca Suzanne (Bradshaw) Sutton, Linda Louise Bradshaw, and Paula
Jeannine (Bradshaw) Smith. Jeannine’s two beautiful daughters Rebecca and Linda,
recently preceded her in passing. Rebecca, Linda, and Buddy were undoubtedly there
to welcome Jeannine into Heaven on her passing.
As the spouse of a career military officer, and mother of four children, Jeannine had
the challenges and joys of relocating the family frequently. (As was her nature, she
always recalled almost everything in her life in a positive and upbeat manner.) During
her time as a military officer’s spouse, Jeannine made a loving home for her family in
Kansas, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, Arkansas, Alabama, Virginia, Republic of
Panama, and finally, when Buddy Retired as Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years military
service, in San Antonio, Texas.
Jeannine was always very active in her children’s school and extracurricular activities
and rarely missed any of their many events. She was also an avid sports fan and
enjoyed following and attending Judson High School football games and San Antonio
Spurs games.
Throughout her life, Jeannine worked with charitable organizations and charitable
causes. Some, but certainty not all of those organizations were: The Officer’s Wives
Clubs, (at all of Buddy’s postings); San Antonio Battered Women’s Shelter, (Jeannine
and her husband Buddy were instrumental in the founding of this organization); The
Rhodes Foundation; The Special Olympics and The Girl Scouts of America, (Jeannine
organized one of, if not the first, Girl Scout Troops for Special Needs Girls). Jeannine
greatly enjoyed, and was especially proud of her work with her Girl Scouts and the
many activities they participated in. Jeannine was also a mentor to many young
people providing them a “safe space” and sound advice.
After retiring from military service, Buddy founded the Family Focus Counseling Center
working with people with addictions. Jeannine worked with Buddy for many years at
the Family Focus Counseling Center as the office administrator.
Jeannine always displayed a positive “can do” and upbeat attitude. She always
believed people, no matter their background, could accomplish anything if they worked
hard towards their goals. She believed in equality for women and also firmly believed
that women could accomplish, or exceed, anything men could. She once even took
an auto mechanics course so she would be as knowledgeable about cars as most
men.
Jeannine was also a longtime member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority where she
formed many lifelong friendships.
Jeannine is survived by her son Michael David Bradshaw (wife Adele), daughter Paula
Jeannine (Bradshaw) Smith (husband Jet), and son-in- law David W. Sutton (husband
of her late daughter Rebecca.
She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Nicholas Bradshaw (wife Allison), Natalie
Bradshaw, Malia (Bradshaw) Cannon (husband Matthew), Dillon Sutton, Chloe Sutton,
Tristan Smith, Cheyanne (Smith) Hagendorf (husband Brayden). Jeannine also is
survived by great grandson, Hudson Cannon.
Jeannine will be greatly missed by her family and friends and will always be
remembered for her immense love and eagerness to help those in need.
