Winston Hardaway, Sr.

August 12, 1936 — February 17, 2022

Winston Wayne Hardaway, Sr., 85, of Schertz, TX, went to join his Lord on February 17, 2022, after a long battle with vascular dementia. He died at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. Winston was the son of the late Dudley Beatrice Hardaway, Sr. and Gertrude Brett Rice Hardaway.

Winston was born on August 12, 1936, in Athens, AL. After graduation from Columbia High School in Columbia, TN, he joined the United States Air Force, where he served honorably for twenty years, during the Vietnam War. He retired from the USAF as a Master Sergeant, in September of 1974.

Early in his military career, he attended a USO dance at Barksdale AFB, in Shreveport, LA, where he met his future lovely wife, Catherine Ann Kearns, whom he married on June 16, 1956. Together, the military treated them to residence in many various places, including the island of Bermuda.

Upon retirement from the military, Winston settled permanently in San Antonio, TX, where he spent the remainder of his life. Though his heart has faithfully belonged to Cathy since they said, “I do”, he answered the call of Jesus in November of 2004, while attending The Country Church of Marion, TX, where they still attend today. Always a giver, this commitment to Christ brought this characteristic even more to life. Since he never met a stranger, he visited with everyone he met, as if they were family. He was quite proud of his family. At one family event where all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were gathered, he proudly looked around and proclaimed, “I guess I’m responsible for all this!” This was Winston’s heart, and he will forever be in ours.

Winston is survived by his wife, Cathy, and their son, Winston “Wayne” Hardaway, Jr. Wayne and his former spouse, Joyce, presented Winston and Cathy with their first grandson, Dustin Hardaway. Wayne and his current spouse, Cheri, presented Winston and Cathy with three more grandchildren, Corey Hardaway, Chelsea Miller, and Catherine “Caitie” Gill. Winston is also survived by ten great-grandchildren: William, Devin, and Ella – children of Dustin and Jennifer; Aiden and Noelle – children of Corey and Kristi; Elias, Alaina, and Morgan – children of Chelsea and Jay; and Meadow and Mariah, daughters of Dustin’s current wife, Ashley. He is also survived by his brother and his wife, Charlie and Peggy Hardaway of Columbia, TN; as well as several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Winston was preceded in death by his brother, Dudley B. Hardaway, Jr. and two sisters, Mary Louise Hardaway and Evelyn Jean Hardaway Roberts; as well as great-nephew Robby Lewis Balch and great-nephew Joey Daniel Balch.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 28, 2022, at 11:00 AM, at Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Shertz, TX; with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Brooke Army Medical Center, Building B, Floor 7T, for the wonderful care they gave to Winston and the honor and sensitivity they bestowed upon him and our family at his death.
