Her confirmation verse was John 17:3. Velma worked on the family farm along with her mother and two brothers Elmo and Melvin. Everyone pitched in as her father George passed away in March 1932. She attended Salatrillo School through the sixth grade. Helping in any way that she could, she convinced her mother to have her apply for a hardship drivers license at the age of 13. She then drove her mother into town every Saturday to sell the eggs and butter. One day while picking cotton with her family, she told her mother she didnt want to pick cotton for the rest of her life and what did she think about her applying for a job on Randolph Air Force Base in the kitchen. She met the love of her life, Oscar Schulz at a dance hall in Seguin called the Paloma Blanca. They went on to marry on October 29, 1938, at St. Paul Evangelical Church in Cibolo. Rev. E.H. Schwengel performed the ceremony. Velma and Oscar worked on the farm in addition to her working at Randolph. They enjoyed bowling and had many awards to show for it. In the meantime, Velma wanted to go to beauty school. So to earn money and attend the school, she worked for Friendly Corner. She set up a beauty shop in Cibolo in March 1954. She eventually moved her shop to her mothers home in Cibolo. They became very involved with the Cibolo Volunteer Fire Department. Annual sausage supper was the ritual every year for Velmas birthday. Oscar was in charge of the sausage making and those two always worked together. This meant days of preparation, in addition to the sausage making. Velma was instrumental in making a quilt with the help of several auxiliary members, to raise funds as well as baking her famous German Chocolate cake for the bake sales. In 1973, she and Oscar sold their farm and built their home and shop in Cibolo. She ran her beauty shop while attending to Oscar and her mothers illnesses. Her beloved Oscar and mother died with in a month and a half of each other. Never one to sit still, Velma threw herself into her community even farther by taking over the sausage preparation until 1992. She became even more involved with St. Paul Church serving as financial secretary for six years, Bereaved Family Chairperson, church choir member for 18 years and was instrumental in starting the Senior Breakfast at St. Paul with the help of Gladys Pfeil. She was awarded the Public Service Award by the City of Cibolo in 1986, and the Volunteer of the Year award in 1990 by the Randolph Area Rotary. Velma was always helping someone out. She would take many of her family and friends to doctors appointments whenever they needed as well as picked up her customers to have their hair done. She loved gardening, arts and crafts. Quilting, baking and cooking. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM (with family receiving friends from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM) on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Schertz Funeral Home in Schertz, Texas.
