In Loving Memory of Valsine “Val” Maria Harrison
October 2, 1962 – July 11, 2025
With deep faith and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we celebrate the homegoing of Valsine “Val” Maria Harrison, who entered the presence of her Savior on July 11, 2025, in Schertz, Texas, at the age of 62.
Born on October 2, 1962, in Plattsburgh, New York, to Lester and Mary Johnson, Val embodied a life of compassion, creativity, and unwavering faith. Her life was a testimony to the love of Christ—poured out in service, kindness, and joy to all who knew her.
Val had a lifelong love for dance and sisterhood. She was a proud member of the Tex-Anns Dance Team at Crockett High School in Austin and continued her dance journey as part of the Angelettes Dance Team at Angelo State University, where she also pledged Delta Zeta Sorority and formed lifelong friendships grounded in service and leadership. During her college years, Val served as a Girl Scout camp counselor at Camp Texlake in Spicewood, TX, where she was affectionately known by her camp name, “Worm.” She guided and inspired countless girls with her joy, creativity, and sense of adventure.
She dedicated over 31 years to education, serving in Pflugerville ISD, Judson ISD, SCUC ISD, and Triumphant Lutheran School. Val was not only a gifted educator but a mentor and encourager who saw potential in every student. For all her years of teaching, she lovingly adopted the butterfly as her classroom symbol—representing growth, transformation, and the beauty found in becoming who you were created to be. That same spirit defined the way she taught and lived.
Val also taught dance for many years in Austin, inspiring students to express themselves with confidence and passion. Whether in the classroom, the studio, or the community, Val brought warmth, creativity, and a heart full of grace to every space she entered.
She was a woman who loved deeply and lived fully. Val found joy in traveling throughout the United States and Europe, treasuring experiences that reflected the wonder of God’s creation, the beauty of culture, and the gift of connection.
She was an active and faithful member of Everyday Christian Fellowship, where she served in the Children’s Ministry with purpose and love. Her servant heart extended far and wide—she was a Girl Scout Leader, a volunteer at the DoSeum Children’s Museum, a dedicated supporter of the SCUC Education Foundation, and a long-term sponsor with both Samaritan’s Purse and ChildFund, supporting children around the world with prayer and provision.
Val is survived by her loving husband, Ronald Harrison; her daughter, Samantha Marie Nikiza (Harrison), and son-in-law Joseph Nikiza; her step-son Nicolas Tai Harrison and daughter-in-law Malin Schaedel; and her cherished granddaughters, Lima and Lulu Harrison. She is also lovingly remembered by her father, Lester Johnson; her sister, Lesma Whalon; and her brothers, Artell, Enrico(wife Lisa), Zaccarli(wife Yanci), and Retsel (wife Rosolayn) and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins who adored her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Mary Johnson, and her two sons, Malcolm and Nathaniel Harrison, who welcomed her into Heaven’s embrace.
A viewing will be held on July 25th, 2025 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Schertz Funeral Home, where friends and loved ones are welcome to come and pay their respects. A celebration of Val’s life will be held on July 26th at 1:30 PM at Everyday Christian Fellowship, where we will honor her enduring legacy of love, leadership, faith, and joy.
Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched—and like the butterfly she loved, her presence continues in beauty and transformation all around us.
