Thomas Scott VanDerhoof passed away on July 28, 2026, at the age of 60. Scott was born on July 1, 1966, to Thomas and Angela VanDerhoof in Utica, New York.

Scott was a creative soul and demonstrated that in his grade and high school years, being a member of the Utica Free Academy Band and Orchestra and also the Punchinello Players theater ensemble.

Since he was a very young man, Scott was driven by a sense of duty and service to others. Scott found the time during his college career at SUNY Geneseo to help protect the safety and welfare of the campus community by becoming a SUNY Geneseo First Response Emergency Medical Technician. He became a paramedic and responded to countless medical emergencies. He also served in that capacity for the Willowvale Fire Department and Edwards Ambulance Service near his childhood home of Utica, NY.

Starting in College, Scott entered the Army National Guard in 1988 and upon his graduation, was commissioned as an Officer in the United State Air Force in 1994.

In the Air Force, Scott quickly demonstrated his leadership abilities. Over his 27 years he distinguished himself as a Personal Administrative Journeyman and Training Manager, thereafter, transitioning into various roles in health administration. In 2010, he became a Health Facilities Division Administrator where he led a team of architects, engineers and medical equipment planners in their efforts to support specialized healthcare facility planning, design and construction. He also became the first Air Force Officer to receive an Environment of Care Education with Industry Fellowship- a high honor.

During his Air Force years, Scott served overseas in times of both peace and conflict in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Saudi Arabia. Scott rose to the rank of Major before his retirement.

After 27 years of military service, Scott made the decision to retire into civilian life. That didn't last long. Fueled by his passion for public service, he became a safety team member of the San Antonio Raceway and the Public Safety Officer for the Cibolo Texas Police Department for nearly 10 years, retiring in April of 2025.

His strong sense of duty was not reserved for public service; however, he was a kind and attentive husband, son, grand-son, brother, uncle and friend to many. He was especially devoted to his mother, Angela. No matter where he was in the world, he always made the time to have their weekly call and Angela beamed with pride at all of his accomplishments. They talked every Sunday, even though he was often several thousand miles away.

Scott was, above all else, a loving and devoted husband to Jann throughout the course of their marriage of almost 33 years. They were truly as one, traveling all over the world with a special fondness for their life in Alaska while he was still in the Air Force. They enjoyed their beloved Scottish Terriers, Eklutna and Max, who preceded him in death. Scott and Jann also enjoyed good food, new experiences and shared a passion for collecting rare and unique items. His hobbies included philately and was a fan NASCAR, 

Scott is survived by his loving Wife Jann VanDerhoof; Sisters Rebecca VanDerhoof and Heidi Coluzza (Michael); Nieces Emma, Sophia and Allison; Nephew Matthew; Sister-in-Law Hilda Pomeroy (Keith); Brother-in-Law Erik Smith (Susan); Mother-in-law Martha Smith, numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. He is preceded in death by his parents Angela and Tom VanDerhoof.

A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Everyday Christian Fellowship at 10:00 AM.
