Thomas E. Byrd of Universal City, Texas passed away on January 24, 2023. He was born on January 31, 1939 to James and Olga Byrd in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
He was a member of the National Guard from 1955 – 1958, then he went on to join the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Vietnam in 1968, where a grenade landed near him and caused significant hearing loss. He was stationed in Fort Ord, California where he was a drill sergeant for 3 years. Then, he was transferred to Detroit, Michigan where he was a career counselor for 7 years. Finally, he was transferred to Fort Sam Houston – 5th Army Headquarters as an Operations Sergeant until he retired in 1982 after 26 years of service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Olga Byrd, his son Damon Byrd, his brothers Larry and Herbert Byrd, Timmy Anderson and Kenneth Graves.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Clara Byrd, Charmaine Byrd Collins, Michelle Moore, Pandora Campbell, Kevin Havelow Byrd, his sisters Betty Byrd Smith and Edie Coulston, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There will be a Memorial Service held at Schertz Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM, followed by a procession to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery for the Graveside Service at 1:45 PM.
