Susan Whitney

Susan Yvonne Whitney, 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 26, 2021. She was the beloved wife of Michael Richard Whitney of 41 years.

Born in Salem, NJ on July 15, 1955, she was the daughter of the late James Henry Durham and Gloria Ann Cook-Durham. Susan graduate from Yorktown High School in Yorktown, VA in 1972. She furthered her education at Kansas State University in 1976 and San Antonio College in 2010. She was a highly skilled telecommunications professional enjoying many positions with great responsibility and challenges. She continued her professional development over the years working for Southwestern Bell in Manhattan, KS (where she met the love of her life, Mike). She worked at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS; Beverly Enterprises in Fort Smith, AR; Avaya Inc in Fort Smith, AR and then moving to San Antonio, TX. Susan ended her impressive career in August 2020, retiring from the State of Texas as a Contract Manager for HHSC. Susan enjoyed making several good friends out of many colleagues over the years. Susan was loved by everyone she met. Fun-loving, funny, intelligent, kind and thoughtful were some of her most endearing qualities.

Family was paramount in Susan’s life. She was above all, a loving Wife, Mom, and Nana. She enjoyed traveling with her husband as well as family vacations. She loved to shop, often times driving Mike crazy as she would look at every little thing. Susan loved to read. Recently, her daughters got her a kindle so she could bring her books with her wherever she went. Susan was a collector of all things Mickey Mouse and looked forward to the day she could take her family to Disney World. The grandkids will continue her love of Mickey Mouse. Susan loved her daughters and would ask many questions to make sure she always knew what was happening in their lives.

In addition to her husband Michael, Susan is survived by her children; Dena Seelen of Chelmsford, MA, Kristen Scott and her husband Patrick of Fayetteville, AR and Amanda Butts of Cibolo, TX. She was an incredible Nana to 7 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. Susan leaves behind a brother, Steve Durham and his wife Rose of Williamsburg, VA, and her Aunt Carolyn Amato of Bayonne, NJ who was more like a sister throughout their lives.

A Memorial Service will be held at Schertz Funeral Home on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 10:00AM.
