Stanley Barnes

Stanley Heslin Barnes, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother entered eternal rest on October 7, 2008 at the age of 84. He was the 2nd son of Joseph & Lucy (Martin) Barnes, born October 16, 1923 in Summerfield. OK. He was educated at Summerfield Elementary School and graduated in 1940 at the age of 16 from LeFlore High School, LeFlore, OK. Stan & his older brother, Eudell, joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) on his 17th birthday. He later attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, MO. Following graduation, he worked at Emerson Electric in St. Louis, MO. Stan joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in December, 1942 and was honorably discharged in December, 1945. While at Air Service Command in Dayton, OH, he met his future wife, Sally. They were married January 6, 1944. After serving in the Civil Service for 3 years, Stan & Sally moved to Tulsa, OK, in July, 1948, where he was employed with Warren Petroleum and Gulf Oil Co. for 33 years. During his tenure with Gulf, Stan & Sally lived in Tulsa, OK, Overland Park, KS, Coral Gables, FL, Caracas, Venezuela, Pittsburg, PA, Houston, TX & Denver, CO. Stan & Sally retired to Scenic Hills, Cibolo, TX in 1984. They enjoyed travelling in their RV for many years and met many life-long friends during their travels. Stan & Sally were the proud parents of 4 children; Larry & Sandy Barnes of San Antonio, TX, Hugh & Kay Barnes of Spicewood, TX, Glenna & Mike Tweedie of Overland Park, KS and Keith & Darcy Barnes of Waseca, MN. Stan & Sally were grandparents to 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Lucy Barnes, sisters, Wathenia Barnes and Wyona Brannon, brothers-in-law, Harold ORiley and Lloyd Brannon and grandson, Matthew Tweedie. Stan is survived by brothers Eudell, Shelby, Derral, Jerry and Aaron and their spouses Marveda, Jean, Ruby, Bobbie and Carol Anne, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving Stan are sisters-in-law, Beverly ORiley, and Marilyn Wurster and brother-in-law, Dean Windom and their spouses Gary Wurster and Joan Windom. Stan was an active member of Bracken United Methodist Church and Northcliffe Country Club. Stan was an avid golfer and life-long sports fan. Visitation will be held at Schertz Funeral Home on Thursday, October 9, 2008, 6:00 " 8:00 PM. Services will be held at Bracken United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 10. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Bracken United Methodist Church at 20377 FM 2252, San Antonio, TX 78266, the American Cancer Society, or Hope Hospice, New Braunfels, TX.
