Celebrating the Life of Sila Adela Garcia

Sila Adela Garcia passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, at the age of 88. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and warmhearted friend, who will be deeply missed.

Sila was born on May 6, 1937, in Camagüey, Cuba. She grew up on a sugar cane farm with her father, mother, and two younger brothers. As a young adult she studied to become a schoolteacher and enjoyed teaching children.

On March 31, 1968, at the age of 30, Sila made the courageous decision to leave Cuba in search of political freedom and economic opportunity. Along the way, she spent seven months in Madrid, Spain, awaiting her visa to the United States.

On October 15, 1968, Sila arrived in Chicago, Illinois, where she became a seamstress at the department store Carson Pirie Scott. Soon after, she met a tailor who would become her husband. Sila married Sergio Garcia on October 11, 1969. In the years to follow, Sila had four children: Sergio Walfredo, Ana Maria, Juan Carlos, and Eduardo.

Sila had a lively presence. She was known to enjoy social gatherings, dancing, sharing stories, imparting wisdom and giving hugs to all. Additionally, she loved gardening and of course, a strong cup of coffee with a sweet treat at any time of the day.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sergio Garcia; her parents, Felix Walfredo and Bernardina (Gonzalez) Abreu; and grandson Anthony Garcia.

Sila’s enduring legacy lives on through her four children, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to their family and friends for their love and support during this difficult time.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Sila’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Schertz Funeral Home in Schertz, Texas. A private interment will take place on Monday, December 8 at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
