Sherlon Nuerl Russell

February 3, 1930 — October 25, 2023

Sherlon Nuerl Russell entered fully into the presence of his Lord and Savior on October 25th, 2023 in Round Rock, Texas at the remarkable age of 93.  He was born on February 3rd, 1930 in Albemarle, North Carolina being raised by his parents Garf and Rebecca Russell along with ten siblings.  He married his high school sweetheart, Velma Jean Wood on June 8th, 1952 and they enjoyed 67 adventurous years together.  Sherlon enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1949 at the age of 18.  During his distinguished career he was stationed in Florida, England, Panama and Texas with a tour to Korea during the Korean War.  After proudly serving his country for 30 years and achieving the highest enlisted rank of Chief Master Sergeant, he retired from Randolph Air Force Base in Texas.  Upon his U.S.A.F. retirement, he found a second career as a driver’s education instructor for patients with disabilities at Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital, helping them to lead more independant lives.

Sherlon was a strong Christian man who loved being a husband and a dad.  He served in Baptist churches wherever he lived, assisting as Deacon, youth worker, teacher, usher, and many other areas.  Sherlon loved all things sports, golfing as often as possible.  He was a major booster for all five of his children’s sporting activities throughout the years, assisting with baseball, basketball, swim meets, and special olympic teams.  His children always knew their Dad was in the crowd because the unique nicknames he gave them made his voice heard above all others.  He continued his special, loving guidance as his family grew, attending a myriad of events whenever one of his grandkids or great grands were participating or performing.

Sherlon is survived by his children, son Chuck Russell and wife Patty of Baytown, Texas; daughter, Libbie Seaton and husband Rob of Round Rock, Texas; daughter Cherri Hill and husband Ed of Pagosa Springs, CO; son, Jeff Russell and wife Andrea of Vacaville, CA; son-in-law Ron Secrest of Tampa, FL; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; two brothers and numerous other extended family members.  He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Jean Russell, his daughter, Suzanne Secrest and one grandchild.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, November 20th 2023 at 12:30 at Schertz Funeral Home in Schertz, TX with public visitation beginning at 11:00 AM.  Honorary Graveside Service will follow at 2:30 PM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.
