SFC Matthew Mungia US Army, was born in San Antonio, Texas on May 5, 1985, departed away on May 9, 2021 in Huntington Beach, California at the age of 36. He married his high school sweetheart, Megan Untiedt on June 7, 2007 and together they had three children.

Matthew enlisted into the Army on April 30, 2008 as 92G – Culinary Specialist. After completing his Initial Entry Training, he was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he worked as a Food Operations Specialist in the Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 3 rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. While stationed in Fort Knox, Matthew deployed to Afghanistan for 12 months as a Food Operations Specialist where he was awarded the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal – Campaign Star.

Matthew then attended the United States Army Basic Leaders Course in 2013 and earned his place on the Commandant’s List upon graduation. In May 2014, He was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas in 62 nd Engineering Battalion, Alpha Forward Support Company. While stationed with the 62 nd Engineering Battalion, Matthew again deployed, but this time to Liberia for two months, where he served as the Food Operations NCOIC.

In June 2015, Matthew was presented with an opportunity to be stationed with the 229 th Military Intelligence Battalion at the Presidio of Monterey, California, at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center as a linguistics student. In August 2016 Matthew was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington as an Advanced Culinary Specialist in the 508 th Military Police Headquarters Battalion where he also deployed to Australia for three months.

From there, in 2017, Matthew attended the Army’s rigorous Advanced Leaders Course where he also earned a spot on the Commandant’s List. In December 2017, Matthew was assigned to the Huntington Beach Recruiting Company, where he served Honorably.

Matthew was a Disney fanatic, he and his family enjoyed trips to Disneyland and numerous theme parks. In his down time Matthew enjoyed hanging out with his children and playing video games.

He is survived by his loving wife, Megan Mungia; children, Diego Mungia, Emiliana Mungia and Miguel Mungia; parents, Rose and Sencion Mungia; sisters, Monica, Michele, Melonie, Marisela, Madelene and Miranda; brothers, Sencion, Marco, Malachi and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 14, 2021 from 5:00PM-8:00PM at the Schertz Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 11:00AM at the Schertz Funeral Home with Interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
