Roger Copland

April 24, 1936 — November 19, 2021

Roger Karl Copland, born April 24, 1936 in Mansfield, Ohio, passed away on November 19, 2021 in Universal City, TX at the age of 85 surrounded by his loving wife and two sons. Roger is preceded in death by his father, Karl Leroy Copland, mother, Erma Mae Copland, brother, William Leroy Copland, sister, Norma Jean Copland Coons and several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Norma Jean Anderson Copland; sons Bradley Copland and wife Michelle; Michael Copland and wife Carrol; grandchildren, Brittany Young and husband Aaron Young; Cullen Roger Copland; Roger Karl Copland II; Kiana Lila Copland; and great grandchild Dayton Roger Young.

He was a graduate of Madison High School where he spent his Junior and Senior years in the Ohio National Guard. He married Norma Jean Anderson Copland in May 1956. He then joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956 and spent the majority of his career in Data Processing and Computer Security before retiring in 1980. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for the Texas State Comptroller's Office and as a civil servant for the U.S. Government. Upon retiring from Civil Service, he worked as a self-employed consultant for several years. Then, he teamed up with Norma to deliver cars and trucks for several automobile agencies before transitioning to permanent retirement.

Roger’s first love was his family, but he was also passionate about cars. With the knowledge he acquired as a machinist and through several years in the motor pool, he and Brad built a 1971 Ford Mustang that was well respected on the streets. Several years later he and Mike restored a 1969 Ford Mustang from the ground up. He loved showing his cars, going to car shows and swap meets and socializing with other enthusiasts. His blood ran Ford Blue! Roger also loved his dogs, especially dachshunds. His favorite pastimes included RVing, watching the Dallas Cowboys, walking the dog, and country music.

He will be remembered as a dedicated husband, a loving father and grandfather, a devoted Christian, and a very hard worker.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2021, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Schertz Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be conducted at 9:00am on Friday, December 17, 2021, at First Baptist Church Universal City, TX. Interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
