Robert (Bobby) Cushman Kusey

October 19, 1963 — November 12, 2023

Robert (Bobby) Cushman Kusey, age 60, of Cibolo passed away peacefully on the afternoon of November 12, 2023, with his family at his side.

Bobby was born on October 19, 1963, in San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Louis A. Kusey, Jr., and Victory Lorraine Cushman Kusey, and his brother Louis A. Kusey, III. Bobby is survived by his wife of 29 years, Luz Angelica Lopez Kusey; daughter Lauren Kusey Marlowe (Colin) of Jersey City, New Jersey, and his son Alexander Louis Kusey of Cibolo. He also leaves his grandsons Ethan and Jameson Marlowe.

He is also survived by his brother Doug Kusey (Debbie) of Austin; sister, Vicky Lu Datz (Joseph) of Port Townsend, WA; and brother Mark Kusey (Monica Savino) of San Antonio. Bobby’s numerous beloved nieces and nephews include Melody Datz Hansen (Justin), Crystal Kusey Wester (Mark), Jonathan Kusey, Christin Datz (Clinton Stellfox), Diane Datz, Kathleen Kusey, Ellen Kusey Penna (Nathan), Joseph Kusey (Katelyn), Rosemary Datz (Shane Foster), and their families.

Bobby was a graduate of Samuel Clemens High School, Schertz, Texas, and Texas A&M College Station, and remained a steadfast Aggie all his life. He worked in many management positions in quality assurance and manufacturing at Quaker Oats, Clorox, Pace Foods, Coca-Cola, Fisher Nuts - John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Cushman & Wakefield, and DPT Laboratories. Bobby received many accolades and awards in his professional life, all of which he received humbly, and shared with no one. He believed in working hard and letting that speak for itself.

Bobby was known by all for his friendly nature and peaceful smile. He loved music with his whole body and was an avid jazz fan. From a young age he loved to play trumpet and shared a special musical relationship with his brother Mark. He loved to travel, soaking in the relaxation of the beach, and reveling in the endless exploration of cities like New York and Mexico City. Like his mother, he loved a spur-of-the-moment adventure and to know him was to know the glint in his eyes and his impish grin before proposing you stay out just a little later. He was easy to laugh, and he loved to make those around him laugh. He was generous with his time and shared his love with abandon.

As “Abuelo,” Bobby delighted in playing with his grandsons. As “Dad,” Bobby was a supportive and present father to his daughter and son. As “Mi Amor,” Bobby provided love and dedication. As “Bobby,” he was the familial glue that brought all together regularly for milestone celebrations and welcomed all during those times. All of us knew Bobby’s love was unconditional.

In the final months of Bobby’s life he suffered a great deal to recover from COVID-19. Through his 123 days in the ICU, he endeared the entire staff to himself. All who cared for him, including nurses, specialists, and doctors alike, saw his kindness, determination and strength, and his incredible wit—despite having very little ability to communicate audibly. At the end of his fight, Bobby was at peace with himself, with God, and with all those around him. He was surrounded and embraced by his wife, two children, and his siblings when he passed peacefully on Sunday afternoon, hearing that he is loved.
