Richard Pena

August 10, 1935 — September 4, 2021

Richard Garza Pena, born on August 05, 1935, in Laredo, Texas, passed away on September 4, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 86. Richard was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served as a paratrooper, parachuting into the Korean Peninsula 144 times. While stationed in Tokyo, he learned Japanese and thereafter enjoyed Japanese cuisine. Richard was a charter member of the Secular Oblates of St. Francis of Assisi at St. Mary Magdalen Parish and served there for more than 25 years.  As a Franciscan, he helped serve Thanksgiving dinner, worked in their medical clinic, and assisted the Parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society for several years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Celia Pena and 10 brothers and sisters. Richard is survived by his children, Ricardo Allen Pena and wife Elsa, Douglas MacArthur Pena and wife Charlotte, Elizabeth Pena Miller and husband Monty, Catherine Pena King and husband Robert, Kimberly Marie Pena and husband Raudel, Richard Pena, Jr. (“Richie”), Jesse Pena and wife Vonnie; grandchildren, Ricardo Pena, Mauricio Pena, Fabian Pena, Marcelo Pena, Herbert Lewis Pena, Jesse Pena, Vivianna Estefana Pena, Selena Pena, Yvonne Pena, Amber Crowhurst, Robert Eggert, Jr., Stephan Souza, Alexander Souza, and Noah Souza; his beloved siblings, Celia Pena Enriquez and Raphael Pena; dear friends, Cece Abel and the late Tony Abel; Fellow Franciscans at the St. Mary Magdalen Parish; and a host of many other great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. The family wishes to give a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Rosewood Nursing Home in Converse, Texas, who took such great care of our father; and last, but not least, his Terrier, “Jack Daniels” who brought him so much happiness.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at 12:00 NOON, with the Rosary beginning at 11:30AM, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 1710 Clower Street, San Antonio, Texas. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:45PM.

A Reception will be held at Jardin’s at San Antonio Botanical Gardens | 555 Funston Place, San Antonio, TX 78209
