Pok Hui Rooney, lovingly known as Susie, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, on August 24, 2024, in Schertz, TX, at the age of 85. Born on December 8, 1938, in Seoul, South Korea, she moved to the United States, where she embraced life as an Air Force wife and a devoted mother and grandmother.
Susie had a short career at Osan AFB in base supply, forming many lifelong friendships. Susie moved to the United States and soon met and married James Rooney on April 28th, 1973 in New Jersey. She became a United States citizen on May 25th, 1977. Her commitment to community service shone brightly as she volunteered at the Hickam AFB Airmen's Attic, earning the Heart of Hickam Volunteer Award. She was also an active president of the Korean Wives Club. Her dedication to service and community made a lasting impact on everyone she met.
Susie's hobbies and interests painted the picture of a vibrant, energetic soul. She had a passion for gardening, maintaining a beautiful vegetable garden and stunning roses. An avid walker, she enjoyed her twice-daily walks and was also a fan of the San Antonio Spurs, particularly admiring David Robinson. Additionally, she relished playing slots whenever she had the chance. Her sense of humor was unmatched and she will be dearly missed by everyone that knew her.
She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Gaitan and her husband Roland; grandchildren Morgan Gaitan-Fountain and her husband William, James Gaitan, Claire Strever, and Chloe Strever. Sisters, Chun Hee and Myong Hee and brother Min Soo. Susie was preceded in death by her husband James Rooney, daughter Margaret Rooney, her father Jin Ok Yuk, mother Yong Hoon Lee, and sister Chong Cha Larkin.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 2, 2024, from 6-8 pm, followed by a funeral service on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 10:00 am and a graveside service at 11:15 am. All services will be conducted by Schertz Funeral Home in Schertz, TX.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or MD Anderson in memory of Susie Rooney, whose spirit and legacy will continue to inspire and resonate within the community and beyond.
