Chief Master Sergeant Paul G. Hulgan passed away at the age of 82 on December 5, 2023 in San Antonio Texas. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, on December 2, 1941 to his parents Paul (Jack) and Helen Hulgan. His father served in the Air Force and was a charter CMSgt, and his father and he were the first father/son CMSgts in Air Force history. Paul grew up as an Air Force dependent in San Antonio, Japan, Utah, California and Hawaii. He graduated from Radford High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1960 and entered the Air Force in 1961 where he worked in materiels management for 30 years. He was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base (AFB), Texas; Ramey AFB, Puerto Rico; Lackland AFB, Texas; Patch Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany; Randolph AFB, Texas; two tours at Osan AB, Korea, and finished his career at Randolph AFB retiring in 1991 and then worked 11 years civil service at Lackland and Randolph AFBs. He loved playing golf and had many opportunities to play in Europe, Puerto Rico, Korea as well as the US. He volunteered at Olympia Hills Golf Course in Universal City for many years after retiring. He was a lifetime member of the Joint Base San Antonio Randolph Chief’s Group and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans where he shared friendships and “war stories'' with many of his friends. He was a member of the Randolph Masonic Lodge 1268 AM&FM in Schertz, Texas, Scottish Rite and Alzafar Shrine. He was a long-time member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and was passionate about recruiting young sergeants to this organization. He served in leadership positions at the local, division and international levels and received multiple recruiting awards. He is one of AFSA’s top 5 all time recruiters and recruited over 1,000 members.
While stationed at Bergstrom AFB, he met his wife, Carol Newberry, of 60 years and they were married on May 31, 1963 in Austin, Texas. They have two children, Jeffrey Hulgan and Julie Perez (Felipe) and two grandchildren, Samantha Perez and Nathan Perez.
He is preceded in death by his son Jeffrey, parents Paul (Jack) and Helen, and sister Martha Jo Carnegie. He is survived by his loving wife Carol, daughter Julie (Felipe) and grandchildren Samantha and Nathan.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 9th from 11:30am - 12:30pm at Schertz Funeral Home followed by a Masonic service from 12:30 pm- 12:45 pm.
For those who wish to say a few words, you are welcome to do so at the visitation between 12:45 pm and 1:10 pm.
Following the services at the chapel we will go in procession to the graveside service at 2:15 pm with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery - Shelter #3.
