Nellie Cruz

Nellie Karina Cruz, born April 7, 1972 in Laredo, Texas, passed away on July 12, 2021.  She is survived by her husband, Jose M. Cruz; 3 daughters, Vanessa M. Cruz, Breeze M. Cruz and Raine M. Cruz; mother, Maria Ricarda Coyotzi vda de Gonzalez; sisters, Rosana Rivas, Maria Guadalupe Rivas; brothers, Alfonso Rivas, Mario Rivas; and multiple nieces and nephews.

Nellie graduated from Martin High School in Laredo, TX in 1991and joined the Army shortly after her graduation.  Nellie’s Army career would span a total of 22 years with numerous accomplishments to include selection and completion of the Army Interservice Physician Assistant Program through the University of Nebraska and deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  Upon her retirement in 2013, Nellie would gain employment at various locations in the United States as a Physician Assistant while following her husband as a military family member. In 2018, she began working as a clinic provider at the Brooke Army Medical Center, Internal Medicine Clinic as Physician Assistant.

Nellie enjoyed her work as a medical provider and her ability to continue to care for the active-duty military, retirees and their family members.  In her personal time, Nellie enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends and embracing quality time with her family.  Nellie loved life and brightened many lives with her kind heart and warm personality.  Nellie’s greatest joy was her family.

A Visitation will be held from 5:00PM - 8:00PM on Friday, July 23, 2021 in Schertz Funeral Home Chapel. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, July 24, 2021 in the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel.
