Maybie Mercedes Giddens, age 66, Schertz, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

Mercedes was born on December 16, 1959, in Camaguey, Cuba to her loving parents Evelio Fernandez and Mercedes Perez Fernandez. She and her family emigrated to Laredo, Texas, where she learned a new way of life at Mary Help of Christians School at the age of 12. Mercedes earned her associate’s degree from Laredo Junior College in Early Childhood Development and served the community in various educational positions. She married James Giddens, Jr. and was blessed with two beautiful children. In recent years, she served the Catholic Church as a catechist at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, an adorer at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and a devoted Eucharistic Apostle of The Divine Mercy for the honor and glory of God.

Merdedes is survived by her son James (Vanessa) Giddens, III, her daughter Stephanie (Gonzalo) Mendez, her granddaughters Hailey Giddens, Heidi Giddens, and Holly Giddens, her brother Evelio (Maria) Fernandez, Jr., and her companion Alice Darland. Mercedes is preceded in death by her parents Evelio and Mercedes Fernandez.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 5-8pm, with a rosary at 7pm, at Schertz Funeral Home (Schertz, Texas). Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at 11am, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Selma, Texas), with interment following at 12:30pm at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery (San Antonio, Texas).
