Obituary

Mary Ann George Vaticalos, 84, of Converse, TX passed away on July 18, 2026 at her son’s home surrounded by family.

Mary Ann was born in Colquitt, GA on September 27, 1941. She was the daughter of Lonnie and Niza George. She was the youngest and last surviving of the eight George children. These siblings included five brothers and two sisters. Graduating from Miller County High School in 1959, Mary Ann later married Bill Vaticalos in 1961 in Colquitt, GA and moved to Albany, GA with her new husband who was in the USAF. Her first child Anthony was born there and the small family moved to East Texas shortly thereafter where her second child Angela was born in Kilgore.

There were several moves over the years, but the family settled in Austin, TX for good in 1974. Around this time Mary Ann began a long and prosperous career with the Austin American Statesman culminating with her retirement in 2003 as a senior manager in the Education Department.

Mary Ann was a very social person and had many friends in the Austin and San Antonio area whom she visited and corresponded with as often as possible. Although removed for over 60 years, her heart truly never left her home in Georgia. She loved her very large family there and spoke with them and of them daily until her death. Fittingly, her son and grandson will return her remains there and reunite her with those whom she loved and coveted so deeply.

Mary Ann was a devout member of Woodlake Baptist Church of San Antonio and enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of her fellow parishioners.

She is survived by her daughter Angela Vaticalos of Converse and her son Tony Vaticalos and his wife Christine of Schertz. She is also survived by her grandchildren Anthony Wayne Vaticalos of San Antonio along with Aubrie and Alec McDaniel of Cibolo, and her great-grandchildren Lucy Jane Vaticalos, Hazel Bracamonte, and Autumn Bracamonte.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM August 4, 2026, at Woodlake Baptist Church, 6980 Woodlake Club Dr. San Antonio, TX, 78244. Reception to follow.
