Marilyn Virginia
Billouin
July 29, 1933 – May 9, 2026
Marilyn Virginia Menefee Billouin, age 92, passed away on May 9, 2026, after a short illness. She was born on July 29, 1933.
Marilyn lived a life defined by courage, resilience, and quiet strength. She was part of a pivotal moment in history, as one of six Black students who, in 1951, courageously sought admission to what is now Midwestern State University during a time of segregation. Though initially denied admission because of their race, her actions, alongside her fellow plaintiffs, helped spark a landmark legal challenge that would ultimately contribute to the desegregation of higher education in Wichita Falls, Texas.
That case became one of the earliest legal efforts of its kind, helping pave the way for equal educational opportunities and contributing to progress that would be reflected in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. Marilyn’s role in this historic struggle stood as a testament to the bravery of ordinary individuals whose actions helped shape a more just future.
In later years, she was recognized as the last surviving member of the original group of plaintiffs who challenged segregation at Midwestern State University, and she was an honored guest at the 2017 dedication of a Texas Historical Marker commemorating those efforts.
Beyond her historical legacy, Marilyn was known for her warmth, kindness, and vibrant personality. She was an avid bowler for many years and loved jazz music, dancing, and a good joke. She also enjoyed playing bingo and Pokeno and had a gift for making friends wherever she went. Her presence brought joy to those around her, and her connections with others left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
In November 2015, Marilyn relocated from Navarre, Florida to Schertz, Texas, where she enjoyed being closer to family.
She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Frank Billouin, with whom she shared 47 years of marriage until his passing in 2007. She was also preceded in death by her son, Michael McCray; her mother, Eugenia Robinson (Mama Bunchie); her sister, Dorothy Nelson; and her brothers, Charles Tarrance, Bobby Tarrance, and John Albert.
She is survived by her loving children: Millicent “Mimi” Gaiter of Warrensville Heights, Ohio; Brian Billouin of Detroit, Michigan; and daughter, Bonnie Griffith and son-in-law, Leroy Griffith, of Cibolo, Texas. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
The family will hold a private service. A celebration of life in her honor is being planned for July, where family and friends will gather to remember and celebrate her remarkable life.
The family would like to extend a special Thank you to the Merritt Lakeside Community for the love, care and concern you showed during our beloved Mother’s illness and for the words of comfort after her death. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in the love she shared and the lives she touched. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, strength, and grace that will never be forgotten.
