It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of MAJ Larry W. Hoxworth. Larry was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on August 13, 1941. Larry passed away due to complications from Parkinson's Disease in San Antonio, Texas on April 20, 2026 with his loving wife at his side. He was the last surviving child of the late Warner and Mary (Clark) Hoxworth of Lancaster. He and his older brothers Russell, Frank, and Glenn and older sisters Gladys Mast and Gloria Seifried were known for their senses of humor and quick wits and will leave this legacy to their descendants who dearly miss their mirth.
Larry is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Mary (Howard) Hoxworth of St. Louis, Missouri, two sons, Scott Hoxworth of Orlando, Florida, and William Hoxworth and his wife Kathleen; three grandsons, Christian and his wife Brittany, Justin and his wife Jessie, and Liam; two great-grand-sons, Harrison and Howard; two great-granddaughters, Wryann and Chandler all of Denver, Colorado; and his many nephews and nieces and their extended families in Lancaster and San Antonio.
Larry graduated from McCaskey High School in 1959 and attended Millersville University. He entered the Air Force in 1964 and married Mary P. Howard on May 6, 1965 in St. Louis, Missouri.
During a distinguished 20-year military career, Larry served as a navigator on KC-135 refueling tankers (flying more than 100 combat support missions in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War), RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, and B-52 bombers. He later served on the staff of U.S. Southern Command in Panama. He retired as a Major in 1984.
After retirement from Air Force service, he resettled in Lancaster in 1984 with his family and reunited with his brothers and sisters and worked with his wife sorting mail at the US. Post Office Distribution Center in Lancaster. He moved to San Antonio in 1997 so his wife could enjoy more time with her family. He retired in 2009 to live at the Army Residence Community to enjoy his senior years with his loving wife and in the company of his many friends from military service and extended family. For many years at the Army Residence Community, he was the coordinator of the volunteers from the ARC that worked for the Texas Ramp Project, a statewide organization that constructed wheelchair ramps for homebound individuals.
Larry was an avid tennis player over the years and enjoyed games and companionship with his friends throughout his life.
He was ever ready to share his love language of humor, wit, and a good pun with all his family and friends at many parties, family gatherings, and holidays. His merriment was cherished and will be missed by all who remember him.
Burial will be held at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on June 18, 2026 at 10:30 AM. A private reception will follow at a later date.
