Laura Jean Leal

Laura Jean “Smidgie” Leal, née Gritczek, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 57.

Born on September 25, 1968, in San Antonio, Laura spent her life rooted in the community she loved. She pursued her education at Saint Mary's University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Communications. Her passion for language and storytelling led her to co-author *Untold Dimension*, a testament to her creative spirit and dedication to the written word.

Laura was known for her loving and kind nature. She was a devoted and proud mother to her son Mason, whose presence brought immense joy and purpose to her life. Her deep love for family extended beyond immediate ties—she cherished time spent with her husband David, her son Mason, along with family and friends. She also held a special place in her heart for her niece Stacy Fojtik and husband Marty, along with numerous other nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She found joy in the simple pleasures of life—listening to classic country music that stirred memories of days gone by, immersing herself in the vibrant world of anime, and sharing laughter and stories with friends and family. These moments reflected Laura’s warmth and ability to connect deeply with those around her.

Laura was preceded in death by her father, Gene Gritczek. Though his absence was felt deeply throughout her life, she carried his memory with grace and strength.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Vitas Hospice for their unwavering support during Laura’s final days. A special thank you is given to Dr. Azreena Thomas for the compassion and care shown during this difficult time.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Laura at 11:30AM on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church of Schertz, Texas.
