Katherine Mitchell

June 2, 1939 — November 7, 2021

Katherine S. Mitchell, age 82, of San Antonio transitioned home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021. Born June 2, 1939, in Springfield, Missouri, Katherine was the only child of James and Dorothy Maggard. Shortly after her parent's divorce, she relocated to Sacramento, Calif., with her father and his new wife, Irene, in the 1950s. It was here that she met her husband, Roscoe "Rocky" Mitchell, an airman stationed at nearby Travis Air Force Base, Calif. The two married on Aug. 22, 1959, and remained married until his passing of cancer on Sept. 26, 1994.  In the early 1970s, the family relocated to Elmendorf AFB, in Anchorage, Alaska, where they would remain until shortly before Rocky's untimely death. Katherine earned her bachelor's degree from the University of the Pacific and worked on the Alyeska Pipeline for British Petroleum. She loved arts and crafts and playing crossword puzzles. Shortly after her husband's death, she relocated to Texas to be near her oldest son and her grandchildren. She became active as an usher at the Lackland AFB Chapel, where she served and attended for more than 20 years. Katherine is survived by her eldest son, Randy Mitchell Sr., his wife Jackie, residents of New Braunfels, Texas, along with their two children Randy Jr. and Johnathon. Her youngest son, Scott Mitchell, and his wife Debbie, residents of Wasilla, Alaska, along with their three children Dustin, Greg, and Lynnsey Avalos. Affectionately known as "nana" to her grandchildren and their cousins. She was blessed with eight great-grandchildren who also loved their "nana." She is survived by one sister, Anita Harrington, and one brother-in-law, whom she raised as her own, Lloyd "Steve" Mitchell, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Her desire was to be cremated and interred with her husband's ashes at Fort Sam Houston National Veteran's Cemetary. A homegoing graveside service will be held on Dec. 7 at 1:15 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or the American Cancer Society. Thank you to Miramar Home Health and Alamo Hospice for making her last moments on this side of Heaven comfortable. She is now in the care of her Heavenly Father and once again with her beloved Rocky.
