Joseph Young

April 4, 1924 — January 2, 2008

Joe Young, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, of San Antonio, went to be with the Lord and rejoin his beloved Cricket on Wednesday, January 2, 2008. He was born on April 4, 1924, the son of Angie Branch and Virgil Young. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Cricket, and brother Allen. He joined the Army in 1942 and attained the rank of Command Sgt Major prior to his retirement in 1962. He then joined the VA as a Veteran's Benefits Counselor. He retired from the VA in 1987 with 45 years of combined federal service. Joe and Cricket were avid Square Dancers and Joe called Square Dancing for 45 years. Many hundreds of dancers were introduced to the activity by Joe. Many of those also joined him in his other favorite pastime, golf. He had a single-digit handicap for many years. Survivors: Step-father, Jim Czyczerski, San Antonio, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and John Thompson, Bulverde, TX; granddaughter and husband, Amy Jo and Jeff Bupp, Cibolo, TX; grandson and wife, Jack and Emilie Fennell, Austin, TX; granddaughter and husband, Michelle and Matt Weller, Frisco, TX; great grandchildren, Ashley and Alyssa Bupp, Sophie Fennell, Tori Weller; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rosemary and Homer Trigg, Sr., and Elaine and Howard Stafford, all of Sikeston, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Bob and Lou Harbour, and many other friends. The family will receive visitors Monday evening, January 7, 2008 from 5 - 9 PM at Schertz Funeral Home. Services will be Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 11:30 AM at Windcrest United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will follow at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1 PM. The Rev. Greg Hackett officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ray Davis. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Windcrest United Methodist Church, the National Parkinson Foundation, or the Alzheimer's Association.
