Joseph Cavanagh

July 4, 1944 — September 21, 2021

Joseph Cavanagh (Retired Army) 77, went to be with our Lord on September 21 2021. He was born in Glasgow Scotland on the 4th of July 1944. A United States Army Medic delivered him in a bomb shelter during the war. He grew up in Glasgow with his family. He became a Celtic supporter at an early age. He learned to kick a soccer ball before he could walk. He played football for several years, including time with the Junior Celtic Football Club. He moved to the United States when he was 16 years old. His family settled in Trenton New Jersey. He joined the U.S. Army in 1961 where he served as an infantry Soldier for 26 years. As a talented soccer player, he played for the Army for several years. He was selected to represent the Armed Forces in several competitions.
While stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas he met the love of his life, Barbara Burditt. The Army sent them all over the world including assignments to Landstuhl and Frankfurt Germany, Korea and Fort Sam Houston, TX. They eventually settled in Kirby, TX in 1987. Shortly after retiring, he became a United States Citizen. He continued to work for the Army at Fort Sam Houston as a Sports Specialist until having a stroke in 1995 where he was forced to medically retire. His love of the “the bhoys” (the Celtic football club) remained strong. He was part of several organizations where he traveled with his buddies to watch the games live and to cheer on his bhoys in Scotland. He also liked American football. He was an avid Judson Rocket supporter. On Friday nights you could find him in the stands under the lights at Rutledge stadium. Then on Sundays he would be at Retama betting on his ponies.
Joe was a proud American and full of life. As a true Scotsman he always had a wee story to tell. If he had a captive audience, he could go on for hours. He was loved by many and will be missed dearly. We find peace in knowing that he is kicking the football once again.
Joe is proceeded in death by his father Joseph Cavanagh, his mother Barbara Ferguson Cavanagh, his sister Rebeca Moffat, and his daughter Sheila Cavanagh. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Burditt Cavanagh. His sister Barbara Devlin (John). His Children Michelle DeArkos (Charlie), Joseph Cavanagh (Amanda), Patrick Cavanagh, Timothy Cavanagh (Drea) and Christopher Cavanagh.
