John Earl Stokes, Sr., 77, of Schertz, Texas went to join his Lord on December 16, 2022, after a brief illness.
He died at Kirkwood Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in New Braunfels, Texas. John was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Earl Stokes. John was born on December 12, 1945, in Montgomery, Alabama. After graduation from Booker T. Washington high school in Montgomery, Alabama. He joined the United States Air Force in 1964, where he served honorably for 20 years.
John’s first assignment following basic training was McGuire AFB, NJ as an Air Transportation Specialist, 1964-1965, from there he was assigned to 15th Aerial Port Squadron, Da Nang, Republic of South Vietnam, 1965-1966. Other assignments from 1966-1984 included Brooks AFB, TX, Osan AB, South Korea, Forbes AFB, KS, Yokota AB, Japan, Randolph AFB, TX, Tempelhof Central Airport, West Berlin, GE and Lackland AFB, TX. He retired from the USAF as Master Sergeant in December 1984.
After retiring from the Air Force John worked briefly as car salesman in San Antonio, TX. He began a second career as a GS-4 with the U.S. U.S. Air Force as a Federal Civilian employee. He rose to the grade of GS 12 and retired from federal service in December 2006. He provided 42 years of combined military and civilian service to the USAF. John spent much of his retired life playing golf and dominoes. He enjoyed playing the local golf courses with a small cadre of friends. When not on the golf course John spent countless hours playing dominoes with his neighbors. John squeezed in time to travel to his home back in Montgomery, Alabama where he kept in close contact with friends. He was known to take frequent trips with friends to Lake Charles Casinos.
John was married to Earline Miles together they had two children. He is survived by his son, John E. Stokes, Jr. (Brenda) of Floresville, daughter, Williethea R. Stokes, four sisters Brenda (Leroy) of Florida, Wilma Stokes, Jackie Stokes, Robin Stokes, brother, Alan Evans (Noi), and a half-sister Linda Carter (Sye) all of Montgomery, Alabama. He also leaves behind a grandson, a granddaughter, a great-grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews amongst other neighbors and friends.

A Memorial Service with military honors will be held for John at Schertz Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 11:00 AM.
