John Thomas (Tom) Garrett went to be with our Lord on Fathers Day, June 15, 2025 after a series of major surgeries in San Antonio. He is survived by his wife, Sherry, his sister, Carolyn Dismukes; his children Jennifer Easter (Mack) and John Gordon; step-son and daughter Brett Denney and Brittany Wiley; nephews Brian and Barry Dismukes; grandchildren Reed Gordon, Drew and Jenna Easter; step grandchildren Preston, Powell, Parker, Paxton Denney and Peyton Bray. He is preceded in death by his parents and triplet brothers who died at birth.
Tom was born on July 29, 1945 to Barthal and Leona Garrett of Winona, Mississippi. He attended Winona High School and graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Horticulture. Tom’s career spanned many diverse types of work - all of which he mastered. He worked in the nursery industry in California and Texas and for Star Foods of San Antonio where he managed Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) for the military. Before retiring, he owned/operated TexasPatcher, a road repair business selling pot-hole patching equipment throughout the entire state of Texas. He had a photographic memory and was a constant source of amazement with his recollection of details surrounding events, people, and sports. He remained a dedicated lifelong Mississippi State Bulldog fan. We can hear his “Hail State” even now.
Tom enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing golf, traveling throughout the 50 States (often by RV), and 30 foreign countries. His most favorite projects were the restoration of his father's Chevy pickup and the building of an awesome tree-house/man-cave in the back yard. A devout Christian, he was extremely generous, always willing to help someone in need. In keeping with his generous nature, his corneas have been donated to the Texas Eye Bank so that a blind recipient could gain sight. His dry sense of humor, his smile, laughter, support and love will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Tom's life (TBA) will be held in San Antonio and a memorial service will be held in Mississippi in the not too distant future. The family requests that any donations in memory of Tom go directly to his favorite charity, Tunnel to Towers (T2T.org).
