Joel Hernandez, Jr.

September 8, 1988 — December 4, 2021

It is with much sadness that we, Joel and Sylvia Hernandez, announce the unexpected passing of our beloved son, Joel Hernandez, Jr (known simply as “JoJo” to everyone who knew him).  Our Lord welcomed him into His kingdom Saturday, December 4, 2021 at the age of 33, reuniting him with his maternal grandparents, Maria and Richard Garcia and his cousins, Gustavo Gonzalez and Andrew Coronado.

He will be missed greatly by all of us, including his paternal grandparents, Robert and Ninfa Hernandez of McQueeney, Texas, his brothers, Matthew and Jacob, sister, Arielle, and wife, Kayla, along with his children and extended family.  He gave us three beautiful grandchildren, including our first grandchild, Nadia Alayna (11), Sophia Liana (8), and our one and only grandson, Jeremiah Joel (almost 2).

JoJo was a man of many talents, one of which was his ear for music.  JoJo was a skilled trumpet player and a gifted singer both in English and Spanish (even though he was not bilingual).  As our son entered his late 20s, he discovered the joy of painting and a new talent emerged.  Influenced by watching Bob Ross videos (which he watched often), he quickly became a great landscape artist as well.  JoJo was also creative in the kitchen and enjoyed cooking and experimenting with spices and we were always more than willing to be his taste testers.

He made friends very easily and had nick names for everyone. His nick name for us was “Modge” and “Paps”.  But he will be remembered mostly for his gift for making people laugh.  To say that he was funny does not do him justice.  He was truly one of a kind.  Whether it was his outrageous facial expressions, or his high energy, childlike silliness, or simply the way he walked and talked to us, he took humor to a different level. He called it being “Hernand”.  He gave us daily doses of laughter, sprinkled with love but doused heavily with his “off the cuff”, fun-loving spirit, that will be truly missed in our home.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 13, 2021, at 11:00 AM, at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
