Joanne Margaret Florencio, a beloved art teacher and talented artist, passed away on April 19, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and passion for the arts. Born on October 19, 1949, Joanne dedicated nearly 20 years of her life to shaping young minds as an art teacher at Spann Elementary School in Summerville, SC. Her love for teaching extended beyond the classroom as she pursued her own artistic endeavors.
Joanne's educational journey was marked by determination and achievement. As the first person in her family to attend college, she earned her Associate's degrees at Western Oklahoma State College, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of Texas San Antonio, and a Master of Arts in Teaching at the College of Charleston. Her commitment to lifelong learning and self-improvement served as an inspiration to all who knew her.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Joanne had a beautiful marriage of 56 years to Joseph Florencio. Together they raised four children; Joseph II (Donna), Catherine (Todd), Jackie (Keller), and Melanie (Caleb). Joanne's nurturing spirit extended to her ten grandchildren; Rebecca, Stephanie, Branden, Dustin, Britani, Charlie, Joseph III, Vincent, Antonio and Kahla; as well as her seven great-grandchildren.
Joanne is survived by her loving husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and sisters Mary Meyers, Fran Downs, and Jackie Groome. She is preceded in death by her mother Catherine Martin, father Jonathan Martin, and Theresa Martin.
In the world of art and education, Joanne Margaret Florencio's presence will be remembered with fondness and gratitude. Her kindness, creativity, and dedication have left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
