Jeffie Ray Ingram, age 84, of Schertz, Texas passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Jeff was born on April 12, 1942 in Natchitoches, LA to Covey and Lela Mae Ingram. At just 17 years old, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1959, where he served during the height of the Cold War. He trained in airborne radar systems, was assigned to EC-121 early warning aircraft, and flew long-range surveillance missions across the Pacific and North Atlantic. After completing his military service in 1963, Jeff returned home and pursued higher education at Louisiana State University and graduated in 1968. He continued his education, studying advanced mathematics at Ohio State University, including calculus, differential equations, and statistics where he earned a Masters. Jeff had a long and respected career with the Defense Mapping Agency, which took him from St. Louis, Missouri, to assignments in the Canal Zone and San Antonio, Texas. Later in his career, Jeff worked at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, before retiring from federal service in 2000. Never one to stop learning, he earned his Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification and continued working with the City of San Antonio until his final retirement in 2008.
Jeff was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He enjoyed reading, history (specifically the civil war),traveling, his grandchildren, and especially his beloved dog Barney.
Jeff’s memory will continue to live on through his wife of 38 years, Marilyn Ingram; daughter, Kelly Opielski and son in law, James; son, Michael Lysaght and daughter in law, Tommye; grandchildren; Aidan, Brady, and Cambrie Opielski, Harrison Engelke and Hayden Engelke. He is preceded in death by his parents Covey and Lela Mae Ingram; his sister Rose Hennigan, brother Jimmy Ingram, and sister Sarah Ingram.
Jeff will be remembered as a wonderful man, a steady presence, a special uncle, and a best friend to those closest to him. His legacy is one of strength, wisdom, and love—carried forward by the family he cherished.
The pallbearers for Jeff are; Michael Lysaght, James Opielski, Aidan Opielski, Brady Opielski, Geoff Pink, and Joe Smierciak.
We invite all who knew and loved Jeff to join us in remembering his wonderful life. A visitation for Jeff will be held on Tuesday May 19, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A rosary will follow from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009 Schertz, TX 78154. A chapel service will occur Wednesday, May 20, 2026 from 11:00AM to 12:00PM, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 16075 N. Evans Rd., Selma, TX 78154. A committal service with military honors will occur immediately after at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
