Henry Johnson

December 29, 1943 — June 27, 2021

Henry F. Johnson, Sr., 77 years old, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather of Selma, TX entered into eternal rest on June 27, 2021. Born December 29, 1943 in Bartlett, TX to Kervelle and Florence Hurd Johnson, he was the sixth child and the first boy.

Henry attended Booker T. Washington High School and excelled in all sports - football, basketball and track. Henry was an avid fisherman. He taught all of his children and grandchildren how to fish. He also was a Super Fan of the Cowboys and Spurs. Henry’s favorite pastime was watching any and all western shows.

At a young age, Henry accepted Christ and joined St Stephens AME Church. On December 3, 1962, Henry married the love of his life, Iris Caldwell Johnson. They shared a marriage together for 58 ½ years. To this union, six children were born. After marriage and moving to Universal City, TX, he became a member and was baptized at Tabernacle Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Gary Coble, where he served faithfully as a trustee and played on the softball team. He later joined Resurrection Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Ray Brown, Sr. He served faithfully on the Executive Committee and the Usher Minister.

Henry was a hard worker, working for various companies, Texas Rockwood (16 years), Wilson Plastics (2 years) Hensel Phelps Construction (18 years) until retirement. He didn’t stay retired long. He then joined the Resurrection Baptist Church Staff as Facility Manager for 18 years.

Henry loved to build things. Even today, several of Henry’s projects can still be seen at the church. Many of the church members can tell you about the things Henry built for them. Henry never said “no” because he loved working and doing things for others. Henry had as great sense of humor, a man who loved God and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lavanthus Kay Johnson, Lois Johnson, Jonell Green, and grandson Sean Malone.

Left to cherish his memories are: His loving wife, Iris, three daughters, Roslyn Johnson Malone (Mike), Cathy Johnson Harris (Darrell) and Kimberly Johnson Conley (Spencer); three sons, Henry Johnson Jr. (Dolly), Gary Johnson (Danyelle), and Craig Johnson. Thirteen grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Three sisters, Verkery McKinley, Mae Lane and Joyce Anderson. Two brothers, Clarence Wilson and Edward Anderson. A host of nieces, nephews and friends.

We loved Henry dearly but God loved him best.
