Gertraud “Trudy” Thekla Bain
May 31, 1939 − November 27, 2025
Gertraud Thekla Bain, beloved wife, mother, Oma, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2025, at the age of eighty-six.
Born Gertraud Thekla Matt on May 31, 1939, in Buchen-Hettingen, Germany, to Melana and Oskar Matt, she was raised in Hettingen. As a young woman, she moved to Heidelberg to pursue nursing studies at St. Vincent’s Hospital. There she met Clarence Dale Bain, serving in the United States Army. Getraud and Dale married in September 1957.
Throughout their military career, the family resided in Germany, France, Virginia, Illinois, the Dallas area, Galveston County, and San Antonio. Upon retirement, they made their home on ten acres in Marion, Texas. They enjoyed the tranquility of country living, a large pond, and a porch lined with Mom’s geraniums where they loved to drink coffee, watch the birds and enjoy the sunsets.
Gertraud was deeply devoted to her family and community. She was an active member of the German Cultural Club, served as a Cub Scout den mother and PTA volunteer, and spent many years quilting with the ladies’ guild of her church, creating beautiful hand-stitched quilts that supported annual fundraisers. She was also employed by Motorola, as well as St. John's Day Care Center. She found great fulfillment caring for and teaching young children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, her parents, and her brother, Kurt Matt.
Gertraud is survived by her children, Michael Bain (Meeka), Andrew Bain (Lari), Denice Bain (Mary), her sisters Else Geiss and Margot Leitz, her grandchildren, Emily, Anthony, Lauren, and Brandon; five great-grandchildren and a loving extended family in Germany and Texas.
