Gerardo Marquez

March 12, 1977 — April 28, 2024

New Braunfels, Texas

Gerardo (Jerry) Marquez, 47, was called home by the Lord on Sunday, April 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Gerardo was born on March 12, 1977 in Ameca Jalisco, Mexico. He served in the Mexican Army from 1993-1996. Shortly after, he arrived in the United States. He graduated from Mason High school in Mason, TX in 1998. Gerardo very proudly worked at various hospitals as an ER Technician for more than 20 years. Serving is what he loved doing, whether it was serving his family or church. Gerardo married the love of his life, Deborah (Debbie) Marquez, on February 25, 2006 in San Antonio, TX. They grew an amazing family together and he enjoyed family time more than anything. Jerry and Debbie were married for 18 years and have 8 amazing children to love. He would often say his wife and kids were his greatest joy and accomplishment. Gerardo is survived by his wife, Debbie Marquez, children, Xavier Tijerina, Gabrielle Macias (Oscar), Andres Marquez, Noah Marquez, Sophia Marquez, Eliana Marquez, Gianna Marquez, and Gael Marquez. He is preceded in death by his grandfather Saturnino Íñiguez and stepmother Maria Victoria Nelms.

Some of his favorite things to do were taking his family out to have fun, date nights with his wife, swimming at the pool with his kids, working in his yard, working with the Bobcat, letting his little princesses paint his nails, fishing with his boys, watching movies, and running. He very proudly ran his first half-marathon in November 2022 and then again in December 2022. He completed many 5Ks with his family as well. Running became a family activity with him pushing the double stroller. Cancer may have kept him from continuing to run but he eagerly volunteered to help with his last half marathon in November 2023.

Gerardo loved his church community, his brothers in Christ (many whom he considered his brothers), many friends but first and foremost, his wife and kids. He truly was a man of God and faith. His love for God and family was admirable. He served on the OLPH ACTS team and he and his wife also served on the OLPH marriage retreat team. His faith and love of God guided his everyday life. His caring and easy nature, willingness to help anyone, and ability to make a friend wherever he went meant he was well loved by so many. His smile and laugh was infectious, often times telling dad jokes.

Gerardo will leave a great void in many people’s lives. We will always remember his pure joy, love, and positive spirit that radiated from him. He always cared about others even making sure his wife was ok as she cared for him during his final days. Debbie was always right by his side until the very end and he was always eager to give her “besitos”. They were true soulmates.

His family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to their family, friends, neighbors, church community, running community, and work community for their selfless help during and after Gerardo’s illness. Everyone’s prayers, support, and outpouring of love for his family has been nothing short of amazing. This speaks to the man Gerardo was. We’ll leave you with one of the last things he told Debbie when he saw her crying: “Don’t be sad, be glad because….Jesus”.
