George Howland, Iii

George William Howland, II passed away on April 13, 2021. Bill, as he was known to all, was born on September 11, 1943 to George William Howland, Jr. and Dorothy Eagleson Howland in Lewes, Delaware. He was raised in New Jersey, the beloved big brother to five sisters and one brother. Bill graduated with a BS in Business Administration from Lehigh University in 1995 and received his MBA from Rutgers University in 1973. From 1965 to 1973, he served as an ROTC commissioned officer in the United States Army, including two years active duty in the Army Corps of Engineers stationed in Germany , followed by six years in the Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Captain. Between 1967 and 1970, he performed as a supervisor in the family construction business. The majority of his career was spent as a marketing management and research professional in the financial industry. In retirement, Bill developed a great love of teaching and taking classes at the Academy of Learning in Retirement (ALIR). He was a hungry lifelong learner and loved to tell anyone who asked about all the details of the ALIRian experience. His work there was groundbreaking, such as educating fellow students on LGBTQ+ issues with his grandchild, and he touched the lives of more people than he could ever know. He took pride and pleasure serving as the treasurer and council chair. He was always well informed, open minded, and favored policies that would lift people up. He always helped people around him that needed a hand to make life easier, from extensively researching the best houses on the market to walking dozens of friends and family through buying a car. Overwhelmingly, people remember him as a sweet, big hearted, gentle giant, welcoming everyone with a big smile, ready with his iPad to show off pictures of his family. Family was everything to Bill. He shared his extensive genealogical research in order to understand and preserve family history. He was so proud of his three daughters; Lisa, Jenny and Sara, whom he raised with his former wife Constance Howland. He leaves behind his daughter, Lisa Hinds and husband John, their children, Emma and Asher; his daughter, Jenny McLaughlin and husband Matthew, and their children Jacob and Matthew; his daughter Sara Alger and husband Steven, and their children Lily and Milo. He is also survived by his siblings; Carol Dellecker and husband Ray, Diane Rainka and husband Ray, Holly Watts and husband Bruce, Jeff Howland and wife Lynn, Kris Bellamy and husband Keith, Kelly Page, and all of their children and grandchildren. If you wish to make a donation in Bill’s memory, the family has requested that any memorial donation be made to the Academy of Learning in Retirement (c/o Tom Colbourn, 26428 Enchanted Wind, San Antonio, TX, 78260.)
