Mark the perfect woman, and behold the upright: for the end of that woman is peace.
Our beloved Gearlean Getter Jones Mason (Gigi) departed this life on July 5, 2021, at her home in Garden Ridge, Tx. She was born on September 26, 1947 to the late Robert Jones and Maybell Tyson Jones in Roseboro, NC and was one of nine siblings. The family resided for many years in Clinton, NC.
She met Robert (Bob) Mason in 1966 on the campus of Fayetteville State University during his alto saxophone rendition of “The Shadow of Your Smile”. Gigi approached him to say how much she enjoyed the band and his performance, which lead to an incredible love story. They married on June 22, 1968 in Dillon, South Carolina and relocated to Bob’s hometown in New York, NY. In 1979, they were blessed with a son, Robert Leon Mason, Jr. Gigi and Bob recently celebrated 53 years of a supreme marriage for eternity.
Gigi graduated from Sampson High School in 1965 and was the Homecoming Queen. She attended Fayetteville State University and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Hunter College in New York. During her early career, she served as a teacher assistant in classes for handicapped children and taught high school at J.H.S. 56 in Lower Manhattan. While living in Germany and Japan, she worked for the U.S. Military as a counselor at a Family Support Center. She was extremely adept at defusing domestic issues and earned numerous awards and accolades from senior military commanders for her exceptional accomplishments. In 1983, while assigned to McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, Gigi embarked upon her career in real estate and taught classes at the University of Maryland’s Overseas Division in Munich, Germany and Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. In 1997, following his retirement as a Major in the United States Air Force and as a Director of Operations at the George Gervin Youth Foundation, Bob and Gigi established Mason Realty in San Antonio on May 3, 2002. Gigi worked for a short period at Century 21 and subsequently earner her real estate broker’s license. Her natural business acumen, charming personality and beautiful smile complemented her success and reputation as a razor-sharp businesswoman who consistently delivered.
Gigi’s spiritual growth can be attributed to her mother, Maybell, who was deeply rooted in the word of God and blisteringly brilliant in holding a mirror to your soul as an affirmation of his almighty power. Consequently, Gigi accepted the Lord as her savior early in her life, which paved the way for the virtuous woman she became.
Early in life, Gigi knew she wanted to explore the world. She and Bob lived and experienced richly diverse cultures at Yokota Air Force Base in Japan and several years in Munich, Germany. They traveled extensively in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, England, Berlin, Macau, Hong Kong, China, and Korea. One of her most memorable travel destinations was the Egyptian Pyramids and cruise on the Nile River. During their travels, Gigi shopped for Japanese and Korean furniture and Japanese artwork, which she displayed in her home. Firmly anchored in the cultural and political dynamics of international living, Gigi thoroughly enjoyed engaging in intense discussions that forced friends to challenge deeply rooted injustices in American Democracy.
Gigi loved to dance and enjoy all genres of music and particularly Jazz. She also spent hours working on her two acres of land and riding her John Deere tractor while trimming trees and planting flowers and vegetables. She was essentially a “naturalist” who enjoyed making the world around her even more ravishing.
She is resting in Heavenly Peace with her mother, Maybell and her father, Robert Jones. She has been an inspiration and role model to family, friends and colleagues; her kind and gentle heart and spirit will never be forgotten. We all loved her but God loved her best and called her home.
Gigi leaves to cherish her memories, her loving husband, Robert; her son, Robert, Jr.; her brother, Leroy Jones; her three sisters, Mary Francis Floyd, Betty Lou Pratt and Nancy Ann Mahoney; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Her brothers Robert Jr., Carl Edward, Troy Tilman and Frank Tyson preceded her.
WE WILL FOREVER AND A DAY REMEMBER “THE SHADOW OF HER SMILE"
