Gayle Elizabeth (Sharp) Laymon passed away on July 1st, 2020. Gayle was born in Springfield, IL and resided in Chatham, IL. She graduated from Glenwood High School in 1970 and married Robert C. Laymon on June 14, 1970. Gayle then graduated from Licensed Vocational School in Springfield, Illinois in 1972 as a nurse. She spent the next 20 years as a devoted military wife, selflessly following her husband and living at military postings in Okinawa, Germany and the United States. They settled and raised their children in Universal City, TX.
Gayle worked at N.E. OB/GYN Associates for 12 years as a Nurse and Nurse Manager. She finished up the last 18 years of her career at Seven Oaks Women’s Center as Dr. M. Shannon Gallagher’s Triage Nurse. She loved her work and helping others, which was evident in her interactions and relationships with doctors, co-workers, patients, friends and family.
Gayle retired from her life’s work in 2017 to fight her pancreatic cancer. Her amazing oncology team of Dr. Ronald Drengler, Dr. Steven Abbate and numerous START Cancer Center team fought aggressively to give Gayle every extra minute they could. We are forever grateful for our oncology team.
In her retirement she traveled across the country and to Vietnam. She spent her borrowed time with friends and family, especially her five grandkids who were her greatest joy and who lovingly referred to her as “GG”. Our family is so proud of the warrior she was as she fought so hard to the very end. She was held by her husband, daughter and son through her final breath and final heartbeat.
Gayle had long ago accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and in doing so also trusted that she would have eternal life in Heaven. As Christians, we find peace and are comforted by the fact that we will be reunited one day, just as GG has now been reunited with the many friends and family who went to heaven before her.
Preceded in death by a son who died shortly after birth in 1973. Survived by her parents - George and Mildred Sharp of Springfield, IL. Siblings - Thomas Sharp and wife Deirdre of Chicago, IL. Carolyn K.
Chandler of Mt. Zion, IL and Melanony Sharp of Denver, CO. Husband - Robert C. Laymon, CMSgt (Ret).
