Fernando Vasquez Garcia

May 22, 1932 — February 18, 2025

On Tuesday, February 18th our beloved Patriarch, Fernando Vasquez Garcia went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was surrounded by family when he passed at The Fox Run Care home in San Antonio, Tx. Fernando or Sergeant Garcia as he was known by many, was 92 years of age.

Fernando was born on May 22nd, 1932, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila Mexico to Liborio and Julia Garcia. His childhood consisted of typical youthful activities such as playing baseball in the streets of Piedras Negras, boxing matches in his backyard or enjoying a swim and fishing with friends. He was also a very driven and industrious child from an early age. At the age of seven he would take his shoe shine box to the local market and earn money for his family. This was due to being the eldest and only male in a family of seven. He saw it as his duty to help his mother care for their family as his father, Liborio, was striving to provide while away from home. With his mother’s blessing , he left home at the age of 12 and immigrated to The United States to help provide for his mother and his sisters.

Later, he joined the United States Army at the age of 17. In April of 1957 he married the love of his life, Lucia Cantu. Fernando served in the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict as a combat infantryman and field communications specialist. He was awarded the Purple Heart with a device, the Bronze Star and Army Commendation medal to name just a few. After honorably retiring from the military he began his new career with the Schertz-Cibolo Independent School District in the transportation and warehouse departments where he also retired after serving 20 years. Many students were positively impacted by his positive and infectious pep-talks during his service in the schools.

Fernando is survived by his children Maria Segovia, Fernando Liborio, Eduardo Tuarino and Mario Alberto Garcia. His Grandchildren Jose Luis, Christopher James, Nicole, Dustin, Samantha, Summer, Amanda Rose, Alexis, Michele, Zhavani, Blanca, Mario Jr, Julia, Kendra and Caleb. Great Grandchildren Cameron, Mason, Aiden, Caden, Dakota, Anthony Jr, Sophie, Maya, Marcos, Angelina, Judah, Sanai, Serenity, Josiah, Gabriel, Elijah, Luciana and Greyson. His sister Lupina is his only surviving sibling.

He was preceded in death by his daughters Blanca Estella, Lucy Gutierrez; his granddaughter Emily Ann Gutierrez; his parents Liborio and Julia Garcia; his grandparents Santos and Celsa, Abundio and Manuela; his sisters Belen, Celsa, Antelma, Juanita and Pilar.

The family would like to thank Fountain of Life Community Church for their love, prayers and support during this difficult time.

Lastly, We, the family of Fernando V. Garcia, would like to quote him one last time with his famous three words of affirmation and approval: BOOM-BOOM-BOOM!
