Evelyn S. Walker

May 7, 1928 — December 20, 2023

Schertz, Texas

Evelyn Seaman Walker, 95, of Schertz, died peacefully in her sleep Dec. 20, 2023.

Evelyn was born to Alice Jane (Rieschick) and Alonzo Kelse Seaman in the town of Beloit, Kansas, on May 7, 1928. She grew up in the Beloit area and after graduating from Bendena High School moved to Topeka, Kansas, where she earned a certificate at Clark’s Business School and upon graduation went to work as an executive secretary at Seymour Packing Co.

She met her future husband, Embert Deole Walker, a native of Seneca, Kansas, in the fall of 1948, while he was a student at Washburn University. They married at First Christian Church of Topeka on Jan. 29, 1949. The Walkers moved frequently, throughout the United States and overseas, during Embert’s Air Force career. They had two daughters, Lauren and Hollis.

Evelyn was the quintessential Air Force wife and overachieving mid-20th-century homemaker. An excellent cook, seamstress, decorator and entertainer, she was a petite and beautiful brunette who was the perfect partner for her handsome husband. She was also very creative: she sang in numerous choruses, painted, arranged flowers, made ceramics, and did needlecrafts. Her life as a military wife was sometimes extremely challenging, but she never complained.

After her husband retired from the Air Force, he had a second career in civil service. The two ultimately retired in San Antonio, where daughter Lauren was then raising her daughter, Clare. They attended their granddaughter’s every volleyball game and vocal performance, all the way through Clare’s master’s degree graduation.

Evelyn always made those around her feel special and appreciated. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a kind, gracious and generous woman whose generally demure demeanor belied a wicked sense of humor.

She is survived by her daughters Lauren Walker Scott of Cibolo and Hollis Walker of Santa Fe, N.M.; granddaughter Clare and husband Jeremie Jamito and their children Joshua, Caroline and Jonathan, of Fairborn, Ohio.

Evelyn was buried at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery with her husband. A celebration of her life was held Friday, Dec. 29 at Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Schertz, Texas, 78154.

Evelyn was an avid reader whose love of books began at the Port Library in Beloit, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Evelyn’s name to Port Library, 1718 Hersey Ave., Beloit, Kansas 67420, 785-738-3936.
