Donald “Don” Wesley Ward, 87 years old, of Floresville, TX, went to be with his Lord and Savior, while in the care of VITAS Hospice Facility, in San Antonio, TX.

He was born on August 7, 1935 in Bogalusa, LA, to Hazel Wesley and Dorothy Belle Long Ward. He and his family moved around during his adolesent years living in Plymouth, NC; Palatka, FL; and finally Ellisville, MS where he graduated High School in 1954 and attended college at Jones County Jr College. In 1957, he enlisted in the US Air Force, in Jackson, MS. He attended boot camp at Lackland AFB, TX.  His first duty station was at Randolph AFB, TX where he began his career as a Security Police officer and met the love of his life, Gerri Voss at a Tupperware party. He left Gerri in Cibolo, TX for her to finish high school, while he went to Kunson Air Base, Korea, for a year. He returned to TX to marry Gerri, on March 26, 1961, at Randolph AFB Chapel, and start their lives together. They were first stationed at Dyess AFB, TX where Kenneth and Karen were born.  Then they were stationed at Columbus AFB, for 3 years. Then Gerri and the kids came back to Universal City, TX to stay, while Don went to Ankara, Turkey, for a year. Upon his return to the states, they were stationed at Warren AFB, WY, for 4 months and then transferred to Kessler AFB, MS, where Kris was born.  In 1973 they all went overseas to Templehof AFB in Berlin, Germany.  They returned to the states in 1976, for his last duty assignment at Dyess AFB, TX, where he retired in November of 1979, as MSgt.  During his time in the Air Force, he was in The Strategic Air Command.  After retiring from the Air Force, they moved to San Antonio, TX, where he worked at Marriott Hotel, UT Health Science Center, and then finally for US Postal Service for 24 years, before retiring again.  In 2004, they built a house and moved to Floresville, TX where they enjoyed retirement.

Don spent his later years of life enjoying his family, supporting his grandkids, barbequing, watching football and old westerns.  He was a member of the NRA and American Legion and an avid supporter of our Second Amendment. He would always find a way to make the people around him smile through telling stories of his life and cracking jokes.
