Donald (Don) was born to Lawrence Edward Pierce and Inez Longoria on February 7, 1935, in Wright City, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara Ann Hughes, and brother Ronald Lawrence Pierce. He is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Dorothy Pierce; son Robert Pierce & wife Pamela; daughters Deborah Winston, Elizabeth Crown & husband James, and Laura Cohrs; stepdaughter Rhonda McKinney & husband Kristopher; stepsons Terrell Miller, and James Miller & wife Becky. Don is also survived by numerous and much-loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many other loving family members and friends.
Donald served his country in the United States Air Force following high school. He received the Air Crew Member Badge and Good Conduct medal; and was honorably discharged.
Following his military service, Donald became an Air Traffic Controller. The majority of his career was spent at Stinson Airport in San Antonio. He also worked more than 10 years as Chief Air Traffic Controller for the City of Laredo. He retired in October 1985 receiving a "Certificate of Service from the Department of Air Force," for completion of 28 years in Federal Service. Soon after, he accepted a part time job at Randolph Air Force Base as an Air Traffic Control Specialist, instructing airmen on flight simulators.
Don loved to spend time flying and fishing! While working at Stinson Field Airport, he took flying lessons at a flight school there, obtained his Pilot's License, and went on to obtain his Instructor Pilot's License. He taught others to fly twin-engine planes for several years. In addition to his love of flying, Don loved to fish! Donald was a member of the San Antonio Bass Club for many years. He served every position on the club's board and rarely ever missed a tournament or opportunity to fish for largemouth bass! He and Dorothy shared a love of fishing and spent a lot of time on the water together. Don's children have many great memories at the airport flying with dad and also being at lakes, camping out, and enjoying fresh fried fish!
Don loved his family, and he spent time with them every chance he had. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Donald Pierce can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Cancer Research Center of your choice.
