Donald Condreay
December 29, 1920 — June 23, 2014
Donald Eugene Condreay of Schertz passed away June 23, 2014, at Northeast Methodist Hospital in Live Oak, after a brief illness. He was 93 years old. Donald was born in Central City, Nebraska and graduated from Grand Island High School in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1940 and served as a Link Trainer Instructor before, and in the early years of World War II. He married Dorothy Jenaih Joiner of West Monroe, Louisiana in September 1943. Donald was accepted into the University Aviation Cadet program in 1944, but was medically eliminated from the program in 1945 due to complications of rheumatic fever. He continued his career in the Air Force as an instrument flying instructor, planner, and manager for the remainder of a career that spanned WWII, the Berlin Airlift, Korea, and Viet Nam. He retired in 1966. His greatest joy in retirement was in joining the Recreational Vehicle community and spent many years traveling the American west. He read Elmer Kelton and Louis Lamour and also had an avid interest in the history of the west. He was an ardent singer and loved to dance. Donald is survived by his wife, Dorothy, daughter Donna of West Jefferson, North Carolina, and sons Daniel of Waycross, Georgia, and David of San Antonio, his sister Betty Cadwallader of New Hampshire. Donald was the devoted grandfather of Stephanie Weaver of Atlanta, Georgia, Susanna Joyner of Savannah, Georgia, Kaitlin Condreay of San Antonio, and Cameron Condreay of LaVernia, great grandchildren Megan and Zachary Minnich. He is preceded in death by his brother Glenn of Columbus, Nebraska, sister Nadine of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Donald was a member of Schertz United Methodist Church and his life will be celebrated there Friday, June 27, at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers family request donations be made to the Schertz United Methodist Church building fund.
