Obituary

It is with profound sadness and full hearts that the family of David Layton Speakmon announces his passing in the early hours of June 16, 2026, at the age of 76, following an extended battle with leukemia. Born in San Antonio, Texas, David lived all over the world — a fitting testament to his love of travel and adventure. And yet, in the end, it was only right that he returned to where it all began, passing peacefully in the city of his birth, surrounded by the people who loved him most.

He served in the United States Air Force for 29 years then went on to become a dedicated realtor for another 25 years. David gave his time and service to volunteer with the Randolph Pharmacy for 8 years and was a proud member of the Garden Ridge Lions Club for over 20 years. An avid traveler, with his wife by his side, they traveled to over 30 countries enjoying life. A lover of corvettes, and a man who could strike up a conversation with anyone in any room, David led a life as full as it was remarkable. He cheered loudly for the Washington Redskins and loved his alma mater James Madison University. “Go Dukes”

There was never a dessert he didn't love, especially Chocolate Cookies, and earned the nickname Cookie Monster. He was a gifted storyteller, which meant you may have heard the same story a dozen times, but still found yourself engrossed in the story. He was unapologetically goofy, generous to his core, and carried a warmth that made every room feel a little lighter. He dreamed of retiring on a beach somewhere, and he carried that easy, sun-warmed spirit with him wherever life took him. For all he accomplished, he was quick to tell you that none of it compared to his greatest achievement — his girls.

His family finds comfort knowing that David is no longer suffering, and that he has been reunited with his daughter Greta, his parents Thomas and Alice Speakmon, and his little brother James Speakmon. What a homecoming that must have been!

David is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Catherine (Lorrie) Speakmon; his daughters Melissa Hickman and husband Chuck, Allison Minton and husband Nikolaus, and Victoria Salz and husband Matthew; his grandchildren Kayla Walerius, Ashley Bouldin, Ernist Minton, Emilia Minton, and Ellis Minton; and his great-grandchildren Lucas Whitney and Cohen Walerius.

David Layton Speakmon lived a beautiful, generous, and full life. His goofiness will be heavily missed. His memory will not easily be forgotten. And for those who loved him, it is not goodbye, but simply until we meet again.
