Colonel Donald R. OHaver, U.S. Army, Retired, of Cibolo, Texas went to be with the Lord on January 21, 2008 at the age of 74. He was born May 23, 1933 in Morgantown, West Virginia to Ray Calvin OHaver and Thelma Genevieve Loring OHaver. After graduating from West Virginia University, the home of his mighty Mountaineers, Donald joined the Army in 1957. Colonel OHaver served for thirty years before retiring in 1987. He was a Vietnam Veteran where he defended his country from 1968 to 1969. For his service in Vietnam, he received the Vietnam Civil Action Medal Unit Citation, The Vietnam Campaign Metal, The Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation and the Bronze Star. Upon retiring, he received the Legion of Merit Award and was inducted into the official order of Military Medical Merit. Donalds military career began at Fort Sam Houston and took him to Germany twice, to Taipei, Taiwan and back to Fort Sam Houston. Donald was married to Joan Ruth Forbes OHaver on July 24, 1952 in Morgantown, West Virginia and enjoyed 53 years of marriage before Joan went to be with the Lord in 2005. He is survived by his sons and their wives, Donald II and Julia, Shawn and Sharon, Kevin and Valerie, Timothy and Wendy; His 6 grandchildren Joseph, Nicholas, Nicole, Samantha, Hayden, Olivia and 2 great grandchildren Taylor and Tanner, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Donald was a member of Community Bible Church where he worshiped the Lord and came to embrace Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. After retiring he enjoyed horseshoeing, participating in horseback trail rides and the general comradery with his horse enthusiast friends. Donald also enjoyed playing golf and watching his beloved Washington Redskins. He was a man among men, a great leader, a staunch defender of Liberty and Justice for all, and a prime example of what it means to live a life of Duty and Honor. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:45 AM on Friday, January 25, 2008 at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel. Inurnment, with full military honors will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
