CMSgt. George R. Hemphill, U.S. Air Force Retired, was born to Samuel Emmett & Lonnie (Haselrig) Hemphill on November 13, 1922 in Lafayette, GA. He passed away on November 7, 2008 in Live Oak, Texas. George is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lisa Elizabeth & Romaine and brothers, James, Raymond & Ralph. He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia M. Hemphill; daughters, Suzette Hemphill, Elgin, TX and Janet Hemphill, Dallas, TX; brothers, Leroy Hemphill, Sr. and Rayford Hemphill, both of Johnstown, PA; grandchildren, Mimi Azaret and Russell Gay; a host of nieces & nephews; additional relatives and dear friends. CMSgt. Hemphill served first in the Army Air Corps and later he was one of the first military men to achieve the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of honorable service. His military career included fighting on the European Front, service in the Calvary at Ft. Riley, Kansas and being an important member of the unit in achieving victory at the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. He was also a charter member of the Buffalo Soldiers. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Schertz Funeral Home. A procession will meet to depart the funeral home at 11:45 AM on Friday, November 14, 2008 to attend a Graveside Service, with full military honors, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Reverend L.H. Mills officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: The American Cancer Society, 8115 Datapoint Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229.
